Lord's cricket ground in St John's Wood in London is one of the world's great cricket stadiums.

Owned by the world famous Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) it is the home of County Championship team Middlesex and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

The stadium is named after its founder Thomas Lord.

The ground was established way back in 1811 in London's Dorset Square, but moved to its present location in St John's Wood in 1814.

Lord's is also home to the world's oldest sporting museum.

Not only that, but the grand old stadium has just launched its new brand of clothing

Images of Father Time, the ground’s distinctive weather vane, will appear on clothes and Lord’s branded suncream could soon find itself on shop shelves around the world.

Lord’s cricket ground in London is poised to go global with its own brand of clothing and is also planning to sell its own brand of wine and even suncream.

The Marylebone Cricket Club, which owns Lord’s, has decided to capitalise on its instantly recognisable name and the vast international popularity of cricket. It is understood the Ashes urn, the property of the MCC, could also become a logo used on a range of merchandise.

The campaign, launched today as the summer’s first Test Match starts at the ground, aims to emulate the success of other sporting grounds like the All England Club, the home of Wimbledon.

The signature of Thomas Lord, after whom the ground is named, already appears on Premium 12-year-old Whisky and Premium London Dry Gin, which are both available in a few selected stores. But now there are proposals to market it on a much wider scale.

Keith Bradshaw, the MCC secretary, said: “If we do this properly, we can create one of the world’s leading brands.

“We are competing with other major grounds and paying more to host major matches than ever. Cricket is so global now that we could link up with the cricket-playing countries and the emerging ones around the world.

“Designers have been into Lord’s to see how we can maximise the potential of each brand.

“But we have to brand the home of cricket carefully. We do not want to cheapen it.”

Jon Robinson, the club’s marketing manager, said: “Lord’s wine could be the next product and suncream, which is sold in the Lord’s shop, could go on sale in the big stores.

“We are trying to build a Lord’s hierarchy.”

Mr Robinson said: “How much money will we make out of this? How long is a piece of string? We are not doing any projections for this year.”

Money raised is not expected to go towards the £200 million redevelopment of Lord’s, but to the MCC’s “spirit of cricket” initiative, which promotes the game.
