ENGLAND VS NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand: 208-6

Three wickets for Lancashire bowler James Anderson ensured England finished the first day of the opening Test against New Zealand in control of the match.

The tourists' wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum fell just three runs short of a century in the day's final session, falling two overs before bad light ended the day's play at Lord's.

High five: England players celebrate after James Anderson takes one of his three wickets against New Zealand at Lord's today

Anderson had been named in an unchanged line-up after England decided to overlook Matthew Hoggard. But he had to wait until 1.20pm to begin the 2008 international summer with steady rain delaying the start.

However, he quickly found the right line and length. He struck with his fifth ball of the day to remove debutant Aaron Redmond, who edged a short delivery low to Alastair Cook at third slip for a duck, and New Zealand soon slumped to 30 for two after being put in to bat.

Anderson could have claimed his second victim in his third over when new batsman James Marshall, who had progressed to nine, edged behind only for umpire Simon Taufel to call a no-ball for over-stepping.

His disappointment at that incident was quickly overcome in his next over, however, when he removed opener Jamie How with a superb, full-pitched delivery which he edged as it left him and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.

Marshall was reprieved again when Anderson hurried and fluffed an attempted run-out, but the third wicket fell soon after, as Taylor spiralled a pull to Paul Collingwood, running back from second slip, to hand Stuart Broad a first success of the day.

Marshall had lasted 70 balls for his 24 before he drove at Broad, only to edge the ball to Andrew Strauss at second slip to leave Daniel Vettori's on 76 for four.

Batting with Brendon McCullum, Daniel Flynn helped the score into three figures, but the Test debutant was bowled off his pads for nine as Anderson took his third wicket.

McCullum was then joined by Jacob Oram to nurse New Zealand to the tea interval, but with five wickets down, England had set up a position of considerable strength.

Together Oram and McCullum put on a brisk 99 partnership, with the wicketkeeper scoring at a run a ball before being bowled off his pads by Monty Panesar.

For McCullum it was a second successive heartbreak at Lord's after falling for 96 in the corresponding fixture four years ago.

Oram and Vettori, the New Zealand captain, survived a further twelve balls before accepting the umpires' offer to go off for bad light.
