The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race
The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends - Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow schoolfriend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford.
On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day, where the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match.
The Modern Boat Race still runs along the same lines but has now become a major international sporting occasion drawing millions of viewers from around the world.
On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake to witness the action.
Cambridge currently lead the series since 1829 (with no races being held over the two World Wars) 79-73 with today's victory, and one dead heat, in 1877. It was first held annually in 1856.
The course is 4 miles and 374 yards (6,779 m) along the Thames in London from Putney to Mortlake, passing Barnes and Hammersmith; it is sometimes referred to as the Championship Course.

Cambridge celebrate their 79th win in the annual University Boat Race on the Thames, and their first win since 2004
The race route along the Thames. The start line is near Putney Bridge and finished 4 miles away at Mortlake.
Cambridge today justified their pre-race tag as favourites by winning the 153rd Boat Race, sponsored by Xchanging.
The Light Blues won the gruelling four and a quarter mile race from Putney to Mortlake by one and a quarter lengths from Oxford.
Cambridge crossed the line in 17 minutes 49 seconds, with Oxford finishing in 17 minutes and 52 seconds.
It was Cambridge’s first win since 2004 and their first under head coach Duncan Holland.
