Man United pounce for Hargreaves

Owen Hargreaves in training for England.

Owen Hargreaves has admitted he is considering an offer to join Manchester United.

The England midfield star claimed earlier this week he was closer to completing a move to the Premiership than he had ever been.

Hargreaves only recently signed a lucrative contract extension with Bayern Munich but has never made any secret of the fact he would like join an English club at some stage in his career.

Although he spoke in general terms on Monday about that desire, without revealing which, if any, clubs had expressed a firm interest.

However, it now transpires Sir Alex Ferguson has made a move for the Canadian-born midfielder, who has spent all his professional career with Bayern.

And, with just a fortnight to go before the transfer window closes, Hargreaves admits he is sorely tempted by the prospect of joining the Red Devils.

"The offer from Manchester United is fantastic," Hargreaves told Sport Bild magazine.

"Particularly as an England international, it is of interest and you never know if such an opportunity will arise again.

"Now is the time to take the next step to develop even further."

Ferguson has already brought one new midfielder to Old Trafford this summer in £18.6million man Michael Carrick, who is currently injured.

But the Red Devils boss has stated on more than one occasion he is on the hunt for more reinforcements.

Villarreal's Marcos Senna has been heavily tipped to join United but, having insisted at the weekend his club would no longer be taken for mugs in the transfer market, Ferguson appears unwilling to meet the £8million asking price.

Utd get Owen
By SHAUN CUSTIS

England midfielder Owen Hargreaves is about to sign for Manchester United, despite Bayern Munich saying that he's not for sale.

MANCHESTER UNITED finally got their hands on Owen Hargreaves yesterday — when the club’s security staff whisked him away from his England hotel.

SunSport pictured Hargreaves being driven off with his United guard at 7.40am as the club closed in on their £13million target.

Bayern Munich are determined to hang on to the midfield ace, who starred in England’s 4-0 friendly win over Greece at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

But he was met at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel by a man from security firm CES, which is used by United.

The same burly guard, an ex-forces member, was recently snapped escorting new Man U signing Michael Carrick.

Another England midfielder, Michael Carrick, has also just signed for Manchester United from Tottenham Hotspur.

Hargreaves, 25, desperate to leave Bayern for Old Trafford, was driven away in a silver Audi — one of a number supplied to the club.

Hargreaves’ agent Roman Grill has spent two days in Manchester trying to do a deal with United boss Alex Ferguson.

Last night, Grill told SunSport: “I don’t know whether Owen has permission to talk to United or not. Owen’s interest in playing for United next season is serious.

“He has a contract to 2010 but the chairman at Bayern insists there is no chance of Owen being sold. Owen has to talk with his club and make his plans clear. This should happen in a very good atmosphere.”
