Reigning Formula One champion Fernando Alonso of Spain won the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on Sunday.

It was the Renault driver's fourth straight victory and extended his lead atop the points standings.

Alonso won by 2.1 seconds over Germany's Michael Schumacher of Ferrari in the 70-lap race to collect his sixth win of the season and his first Canadian Grand Prix victory.

The Spaniard was fourth at his first Canadian Grand Prix in 2003, but failed to finish the race in the following two years.

Schumacher, a seven-time winner in Montreal, passed Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen of McLaren on a hairpin turn on the second-last to last lap to claim second place.

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, Alonso's Renault teammate, was fourth.

Villeneuve fails to finish after crashing

Jacques Villeneuve of Iberville, Que., crashed into a wall late and failed to finish at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the track named after his late father.

Villeneuve finished second in his first Canadian Grand Prix in 1996, but since then, he has not finished on the podium.

On Sunday, the Canadian sat eighth on lap 59 when his BMW Sauber hit a wall on a chicane at the back of the track and smashed in one side of the car.

Villeneuve was not hurt in the incident.
