Russian President Vladimir Putin and other politicians aren’t making the rainbow connection with video game FIFA 17.
The strongman and his Kremlin allies are blasting the soccer organization and the Canadian arm of developers EA Sports for promoting “gay propaganda.”
The Russian rage comes in the wake of a piece of Ultimate Team content being unveiled. The Moscow misers were upset that the content supports LGBTQ rights group Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces.
Stonewall’s intent is to combat homophobia in sports. And one of the ways they’re doing it is by offering a free rainbow-coloured jersey in the video game.
A letter, sent by MPs from Putin’s United Russia Party and the Communist Party, read: “The FIFA multiplatform video game, developed by EA Canada, invites users to support the action of the English Premier League’s ‘Rainbow shoelaces’ action — a large-scale campaign in support of the LGBT community.
“Meanwhile, according to the law the ‘protection of children from information harmful to their health and development’ ... includes information that promotes non-traditional sexual relations.”
One of the world’s few remaining communists, MP Valery Rashkin told Izvestia: “It is necessary to verify the computer game FIFA 17 for compliance with the stated age group and (ensure) the game (is) in accordance with Russian legislation.”
Former champion figure skater Irina Rodnina, who won three Olympic gold medals, hinted the game should be banned.
Amnesty International said Russia’s latest homophobic outburst is worrying.
“With the Russian World Cup only 18 months away, it really is time for the authorities to roll back their homophobic legislation and discriminatory practices, and to set about hosting the world’s premier football tournament in a spirit of tolerance and hospitality toward all,” Amnesty’s Denis Krivosheev told The Independent.

As I recall, the russians were primarily against rainbow sex with children...

"This has upset some Russian MPs. The country’s infamous 2013 “gay Propaganda law” prohibits “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships” being available to minors. FIFA 17, being an all-ages sports game, is available to minors, and despite this being a tiny and optional update to the game, has some calling for drastic changes to the game itself.

I used to have Fifa 96. The graphics were incredibly crude and childlike compared to today's Fifa games and I remember that if you held down the shoot button for several seconds as you were approaching your opponent's penalty area and then released the button at your chosen moment the player you were controlling used to smash a shot towards goal that was like an Exocet missile.
