The cringeworthy moment an American's arrogance saw his comeuppance

The Americans are renowned the world over for their breathtaking arrogance and air of superiority. This is why so many people love to beat them at sporting events.

So it must have been very sweet for British runner Scott Overall to pip his American rival Ben Payne to the finish line and win the race in Atlanta - on Fourth July - after the cocky American runner slowed down and started to prematurely celebrate what he thought was a victory.

Moment American marathon runner celebrated victory too early and gets beaten to the finish line by British competitor

He appeared to grimace as he crossed the line and realized his mistake

British runner Scott Overall sailed past Payne just at the end of the race

Overall took to Twitter and tweeted: 'Always run through the line! #Peachy'

This is the soul-destroying moment an American runner celebrated his victory a little too early at the end of a race and ended up getting beaten to the finish line by a British runner.

Ben Payne made the gaffe during the 10-kilometre AJC Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, Georgia, making his Fourth of July a day that he won't forget.

Payne's ill-timed decision was caught on NBC broadcast WXIA and shows the moment he nears the finish line of the race and slows down, only for British Olympian Scott Overall to pass him.

Too early: Ben Payne, left, appears to gesture 'number one' with his arm in the air for victory

Beaten: No-nonsense Brit Scott Overall, right, hits the tape to win the men's open division while runner Ben Payne, left, comes in second place at the finish line of the AJC Peachtree Road Race on Saturday

They think it's all over: Payne slows down after they both cross the finish line, as Overall, right, keeps running

In retrospect, it was too early for Payne to have turned on cruise control because it all ended in tears.

NBC footage shows Payne gesture 'number one' as he hoists his arm in the air for victory.

But as he gets the celebration underway, Overall comes running through the line and pips him to the post by just 9/100ths of a second.

Payne grimaces for a moment and then puts his hands on his hip as he realizes what has just happened.

It's likely a lesson that he'll never forget as every second counts in a race.

The annual 10K race is a 4th of July tradition in Atlanta.

Both men thought that they had won the race, but organizers declared Overall the winner hours later.

Overall, a British Olympian, was the fastest British runner in this year's London Marathon and ran the marathon for Team GB at London 2012.

Following the decision, he took to Twitter and tweeted a message that appeared to mock his rival.

He wrote: 'Pleased to take the win today at the Peach tree 10km. Always run through the line! #Peachy.'

And the Brit was allowed to win? I'm shocked. The yanks would usually find some way to disqualify him just to make the yank loser the winner. Bloody nerve they even had debate it.

Why did there need to be an inquiry? Even in America first across the finish line is the winner. But you do need to cross the finish line first.

Typical American. I'm surprised he didn't start chanting "MURICA" and clapping. Meanwhile the Brit just finishes the race with decorum.

It's kinda funny that the Briddish, who once bestrode the world, are now reduced to scanning for their very occasional sports victories to crow over, in a desperate attempt to convince themselves they're not a second-rate client state of their former colony.

Sad, but funny.

It's obvious that our evermore cock-wrestling pair of friends here, Charlie Chapless and The Little Injun That Couldn't haven't laffed in decades.

It was a funny brain fart story that could have been presented like this:

Dude plays win card too soon.

with an addendum for the sportsfans:

But anyway...let our beyond the sea brothers play slap and tickle I guess.

The Americans are renowned the world over for their breathtaking arrogance and air of superiority.

Looks like they have earned that superiority at least as far as competing in global competitions and not some sad little Sunday afternoon footrace

This is why so many people love to beat them at sporting events.

They rarely do beat the US at sporting events

Briddish arrogance on the world stage and not some local 10K.

British Olympian Steve Ovett raises hands in victory before crossing the finish line and is beaten by an Irishman would would not quit.

The Brits are the best in the world at running away.... Centuries of tradition of retreat have been virtually bred into them

Whoa Capt., believe you're being a tad unfair there, perhaps confusing the Brits with the French, who
really never ran away that much either, except in historical novels and online forums.

Whatever - no dog in the fight, and really don't give a sh-t.8O
