Yesterday it was Bayern Munchen 4-0 Barcelona.

Today it was Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Real Madrid.

Could this be the beginning of the end for mighty Spain?

And the beginning of a new era for Germany?

Bayern Munich won this year's Champions League, after beating fellow German side Borussia Dortmund - making their first appearance in the Final since 1997 - in the Final. Bayern won 2-1 at Wembley Stadium in London (Wembley also hosted the 2011 Final between Barcelona and Manchester United and it has now hosted this Final - European football's equivalent of the Superbowl - more times than any other stadium).

Spanish teams, however, have not been dominating the Champions League, the world's greatest club football competition. It is English teams which have been dominating it.

Since season 2002/03, Spanish teams have won it three times (Barcelona in 2006, 2009 and 2011), English teams have won it three times (Liverpool in 2005, Manchester United in 2008 and Chelsea in 2012), Italian teams have won it three times (AC Milan in 2003 and 2007 and Inter Milan in 2010), a Portuguese team has won it once (Porto in 2004) and a German team has won it once (Bayern Munich in 2013). Bayern's win this year was the first time a German team has won it since 2001.

But when you look at it in other ways, you will see English teams dominating. At least one English team has been in seven of the last nine Champions League finals - both teams in the 2008 Final were English, and that was only the second time in the competition's history that two teams from the same country have been in the Champions League Final (two Italian teams were in the 2003 Final). That's a better record than any other country.

There were four English teams in the 2008 Champions League Quarter Finals and four in the 2009 Quarter Finals - that's eight English teams in the Champion League Quarter Finals over two years. No other country had ever had four teams in the Quarter Finals before, yet England managed to do that twice in succession.

In the 15 seasons up to and including season 2008-09, there were a total of 32 appearances for English teams in the Champions League Quarter Finals. That's more than from any other country. England's nearest challengers in this regard were Italian teams, who made 27 appearances in the Quarter Finals.

Not only that, but in the six seasons up to and including season 2008-09, English teams made more appearances in the Semi-Finals - 11 in total - than teams from any other country. Spanish teams made 9 appearances in the Semi-Finals.

So to say that Spanish teams have been dominating the Champions League in recent seasons is complete and utter rubbish. The stats show that it actually English teams which have been dominating.
