He doesn't even come remotely close to being the Athlete that any competitive decathlete is. He would fall apart trying to do all ten of those athletic events.

Actually one of the greatest athletes of all time (when you considered where he started from and what he had to overcome) was Glenn Cunningham.

There are a lot of choices for this but the biggest problem is an honour like
that is subjective. I don't regard surf boarding a sport for example where a
lot of others would.
In addition who did they ask and how old were they?
There doesn't appear to be much detail on how this conclusion was realized.
Then again if I knew more about the so called winner it might make a bit of
a difference.

And they would be swallowed by the waves if they tried to stand on his surfboard. The infographic Loc posted paints a pretty clear picture of how far he is ahead of the competition in his sport. Elite athletes aren't made by their sport, but by how well they compete in their sport.

Wouldn't anything that involves movement and competition be regarded as a sport?

Looks like he has won 57 events. How many surfers on the planet vs golfers? Tiger has 100 professional wins when adding in PGA, European etc.

the accumulation of individual credentials and longevity in an athlete's career has to play a big part

in 'he/she' being thought of as the greatest athlete.

To do something at the highest level over a long period of time is not to be ignored, and proves to

me that this athlete is deserving of being thought of as the best.

Wayne GretZky for sure, and others can be included.

Athletes that strive to win a gold medal in the olympics, and do, but that is the only highlight, for

me can't be included, and that includes triathon athletes, unless they win over and

over thru out their careers in quality events.

By any chance do you mean Pakistani Jahangir Khan who is former squash champion?

Jahangir Khan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I consider this the greatest sports dynasty in history:

Khan Dynasty

I just watched Muhammad Ali Defeat Joe Frasier twice along with seven or eight other boxers. There
is no other athlete or sport to compare with slugging it out for up to twelve or fifteen rounds invariably
with someone at least four or five years younger
