A Question For NFL Fans

I've been wondering about this for a few years. Why is it that the Green Bay Packers have uniforms almost identical to those of the Edmonton Eskimos? I happen to know that the Eskimos got their colours from the Universtiy of Alberta Golden Bears. Did Green Bay do the same? I do know that the Golden Bears date back to 1910. I also know that green and gold was not chosen as the colours for Green Bay until the 1930s. Anyone else have any info?

The Packers originally took their colors from the Fighting Irish but gradually moved to the
Green Blue and Gold in the thirties and forties. It was much later that they dropped
the blue, from the color scheme. The official team colours of Green and Gold came about
back in 1950. That information is from the History of the Green Bay Packers.
I think I might switch my cheering preference for them too, as they are a community owned
team and the only community owned team in the United States.
Of course in Canada the Saskatchewan Roughriders are the only community owned football
team in the CFL

Green Bay being a team owned by the city of Green Bay is pretty cool. Also being that Green Bay is not a capital city like NY or Chicago adds to it.

In conclusion it is clear that Green Bay got their colors from Notre Dame and not Alberta.

eaglesmack I agree with you, but does that mean the Eskimos got the colours from Green Bay

I would say that the Eskimos got their colors from Alberta just like BS said they did.

Here is a little note from the CFL something I did not know that is possible.
The reason we ended up with the Ottawa Roughriders and the Saskatchewan
Roughriders is in a small way because there was a contingent of Canadians
serving with Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish American war and they were at
San Juan Hill. Roosevelt's troops became known as the roughriders and its said
some of those Canadians settled in Eastern Canada and some out West.
If it is true its most interesting and would clear up some of the confusion as to
why the league had two teams called the roughriders.

I heard an entirely different story. The Saskatchewan team got the name from the ranchers that were once a big part of Saskatchewan's economy. Ottawa got its name from the loggers along the Ottawa River who used to ride the logs down the river. Neither of those may be true, but I would be very surprised to learn of any link to Teddy Roosevelt. The reason for the two different teams having the same name is also due to the fact that Saskatchewan and Ottawa originated in two separate leagues.

Hmmm ~ I always heard that Green Bay got their green colored unis from the ''Green'' Bay. I see now that this was incorrect. Learned something there!

Quote:

The Regina Rugby Club changed its colours in 1911 to blue and white to match the
Regina Amateur Athletic Association. The colours were changed again in 1912 to
red and black, the infantry colours of the Canadian contingent which fought with
Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War. The team kept these colours for 36
years. The Regina Rugby Club changed its name to the “Regina Roughriders” in
1924. One theory is that they were named after this Canadian contingent that had
become known as the “Roughriders.” The other theory is that the name came from
the NWMP who were called Roughriders because they broke the wild horses that
were used by the force.
