A homeless man stole cookies from a church in the 10700 block of Okeechobee Boulevard. A deputy found him sitting by the building’s entrance. He said he had been looking for assistance, pulled on a door and it opened. He helped himself to the cookies, but a cleaning person saw him and called 911.

A church employee arrived at the scene and said the church would press charges.

The man was arrested and taken to the county jail.

The value of the cookies was $2.25.

Nothing, as I don't have one.

Looks like it was a waste of time and resources.

To err is human, to forgive is divine.

Many moons ago NYC mayor Fiorello LaGuardia was a judge who had an interesting case: a man was arrested during the Great Depression for stealing a loaf of bread. The judge fined everyone in the room one penny and this was used to pay for the man's offense. Dunno how people in the room felt at having to pay a cent for someone else's fault.

Nevertheless, a representative from the church has responded to the criticism by saying that the church’s decision to press charges had the homeless man’s interests at heart.

The representative wrote: "The young man appeared to be under the influence. Since he was wandering around the neighborhood, the officer suggested the best course may be to press charges for the incident which would enter the young man into the system where he could find help.”

Adding: “The church staff member agreed. Although our church partners with PBSO to provide hundreds of meals for needy families, this time we agreed with the officer’s suggestion that the young man needed more help than just a free meal. We have contacts with rehabilitation programs. We do refer individuals to such programs and in retrospect we might have done so with this individual.” [...]

You,re feral and should understand why someone else is living feral and does feral things and that it's his own choice to end living a feral life not up to a Church. Sometimes feral people need to be caged up for committing crimes.

Now his jibrat friends will break in and steal the copper.

Somebody send a request on their behalf to the FCIC for a couple dozen of the Smotastick.

A while back my family was living in a foreign country, Cliffy. A young man began sleeping in our apartment stairwell. Although we were not terribly fluent in the language, we invited him into our flat. We ate with him and attempted to converse with him. We gave him some warm outer clothes to wear. When he left, we began praying for Vanya to find his way to rest and recovery.

A short while later, he was arrested by the police and we did not see him again. We did hear from our co-worker at the local jail, that this young man was accessing social services and making progress towards a healthier life.

Recognizing our limitations in this situation, we did what we could and committed him to God in prayer.
