If you were A Canadian on D-Day, you were fighting for Britain and her Empire seeing as we were a colony still. You'll note the 3rd Canadian Division was part of the British 1st Corps.
And uh, sorry Jack but I AM related to a member of the D-Day assault force. My Grandfather landed on Juno with the 5th Battalion of the Royal Highland Regiment (The Black Watch).

After consultation between Canada's federal and provincial governments, the repeal, amendment or alteration of the British North America Acts, 1867–1930 — Canada's Constitution — was specifically excepted from the terms of the statute. Nor did Canada immediately take up all of its new powers under the Statute of Westminster. Not until 1949, for instance, did the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, a British body, cease to be a final court of appeal for Canadians.
In fact, even after WW2 Canada chose to remain as a quasi-independent colony until 1982.
Further, all but one of the Dominions chose to adopt every resolution of the Statute and thus sever all legal ties to Britain; Canada however was not fully prepared for complete independence.
