Swiss national referendum to bring the country into line with the EU with tougher gun control looks like a overwhelming yes.

Common sense prevailing.

Swiss voters agreed on Sunday to adopt tighter gun controls in line with changes to European Union rules, heading off a clash with Brussels, projections for Swiss broadcaster SRF showed.
The projections from the gfs.bern polling outfit saw the measure passing in the binding referendum by a comfortable 67-to-33-per-cent margin.
The restrictions, which apply to non-EU member Switzerland because it is part of Europe's Schengen open-border system, had raised hackles among shooting enthusiasts ahead of the vote under the Swiss system of direct democracy.
Failure to adopt the rules could have forced Switzerland to leave the passport-free Schengen zone and the Dublin joint system for handling asylum requests.
After militants killed scores in Paris and elsewhere in 2015, the EU in 2017 toughened laws against purchasing semi-automatic rifles such as the ones used in those attacks, and made it easier to track weapons in national databases.
Opinion polls had shown Swiss voters backing the measure by a two-to-one margin.
The initial EU proposal provoked an outcry because it meant a ban on the Swiss tradition of ex-soldiers keeping their assault rifles.
Swiss officials negotiated concessions for gun enthusiasts who take part in the country's numerous shooting clubs, but any restrictions imported from the EU go too far for right-wing activists concerned about Swiss sovereignty.
Gun rights proponents complained the rules could disarm law-abiding citizens and encroach on Switzerland's heritage and national identity, which includes a well-armed citizenry.
Switzerland has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership in Europe, with nearly 48 per cent of households owning a gun.

The result of people not understanding their own history.

What is the Swiss murder rate?

0.54 per 100,000................one third that of Canada, one tenth that of the USA, one of the lowest murder rates on earth.

How many Swiss own personal guns?

48% of households have guns.

When was Switzerland last invaded or part of an international conflict?

Well over 200 years ago.

The only nation on earth that can say that.

Why?

Well in the last big European wart, Switzerland was surrounded by fascists. An island of peace in a sea of bloodshed. Hitler wanted to invade this small nation, but his generals warned him that, while possible, the invasion would cost hundreds of thousands of casualties, and they could not afford it.

Why?

Because the Swiss were/are armed to the bloody teeth.

Next time they won't be so lucky.

People are such idiots.

The Swiss cut deals with the Fascists around them. So did the Swedes ... and the Irish Republic, for that matter. Swiss "neutrality" was tipped well in one direction.

More or less true.......and totally irrelevant.
If the Swiss hadn't cut deals with the Fascists, Switzerland would have been flattened in a couple of days and that armed citizenry would have been totally irrelevant. The real armed-to-the-teeth keaners would have all have been pushed into mass graves before the week was out.

If they didn't adopt the Eu rules they would suffer consequences.

The decision was pragmatic.

Maybe, maybe not. Conjecture is not a valid way to deal with history.

The fact is this; the entity that controlled by far the most powerful fascist military machine and that essentially controlled mainland Europe wanted to invade, believed they could succeed, and did not because of the obvious cost. From a tiny nation.

It is called deterence.

It is also a fact that the Swiss have not been involved in armed conflict for over 200 years.........as far as I know the only nation that can claim that.

If it works, don't fix it.

The Nazis were deterred from attacking Switzerland by the(ir) gold in the banks, not by the guns in the houses.

The Blitzkreig was not deterred by handguns and rifles.

We could point to Cdn MP Iqra Khalid who was raised as a Muslim....................................................
But we'd only do that if we were stupid enough to think that the U.S. is Canada, and that Mexico is a religion.

And of us two, only one's that stupid.

But that's OK. I understand that your motivation is hatred of non-white people.

Does the slide stay open on the last round to help in faster reloading "clip change"?
Just askin' though that wouldn't be as important as accuracy in target shooting....
They also fit comfortably in the back pocket of regular old jeans. No fuss, no muss, no holster, and at 0.9 inches (2.3 cm) thick, they're pretty much unnoticeable. Seven in the clip.

MOSCOW — A Russian gun rights activist serving a U.S. prison sentence for acting as an unregistered foreign agent has released a video asking for money to help pay her legal costs.
Maria Butina was sentenced in April to 18 months after she admitted gathering intelligence on the National Rifle Association and other groups at the direction of a former Russian lawmaker.
In the video that appeared on social media, Butina speaks on a phone in a dormitory with bunk beds. She says her lawyer is filing an appeal and she asks for contributions to help pay him.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Sunday on state TV that “we aren’t financing a lawyer, but we are doing everything so that she will be afforded all rights as a Russian citizen.”

Conclusion to the test: the Ruger's better. Mostly because the lighter trigger makes the aim more stable.

I thought as much. Not specifically because of trigger pull (I've fired DAO Rugers that required a team of horses to pull the trigger) but just because I consider Ruger as the go to for inexpensive, good quality firearms.

Austria has a higher rate of gun ownership than Switzerland. It didn't stop the Nazis from running them over.

BTW the Swiss voted 64% to bring in the EU rules on auto and semi auto weapons.

Common sense.

The NAZIs were thrilled to pieces to find so many like-minded Austrians.

Only an idiot progressive would think that restricting liberty for no purpose is "common sense".

Their murder rate is 0.54 per 100,000.

Why restrict guns?
