Former refugee getting boot for role in human smuggling ring

A Kosovar immigrant who claimed refugee status now faces the boot from Canada for his role in an “organized crime” human smuggling operation.
Azllan Pajazitaj, 46, snuck into the country from the U.S. in 2008, making a refugee claim in Kitchener, the Waterloo Record reports.
Pajazitaj reportedly picked up six people at a local Holiday Inn and another person from elsewhere in the city on Jan. 26, 2012.
He then drove them to the village of Stanstead, Que,. on the U.S.-Canada frontier – ground zero for people smuggling.
U.S. officials tipped off the RCMP they were expecting a human smuggling attempt.
Pajazitaj’s rented Dodge Caravan was spotted in Stanstead driving suspiciously. Border officials were alerted.
Around 8 p.m., U.S. officials nabbed seven people just over the border in Vermont.
Four of the immigrants were from Colombia while others came from the U.S., Mexico and Kosovo.

Pajazitaj was later pulled over by cops and was carrying $9,900 in an envelope. He was arrested for conspiring to smuggle people into the U.S.
While the charge was later stayed, the suspect kissed the cash goodbye.
In 2016, the Record reports Pajazitaj was deemed “inadmissible to Canada” because the smuggling scheme had links to organized crime.
He was ordered deported but Pajazitaj applied for a judicial review. It was dismissed last month.
Pajazitaj told cops he was oblivious to the fact he was part of a human smuggling scheme.
But the judge the smuggling “occurred in the context of transnational organized crime.”
