SAN FRANCISCO — Officers arrested a man who slashed another man with a sword after the victim allegedly knocked his “Make America Great Again” hat from his head, San Francisco police said Thursday.
Leor Bergland, 30, of San Francisco was arrested in a restaurant Wednesday night by officers staking out his neighbourhood since the Friday night incident, police said.
A 27-year-old Berkeley, California, resident and Bergland encountered each other outside of the popular Church of 8 Wheels, a roller-skating rink inside an old church in San Francisco’s Fillmore district, police said.
Bergland drew a sword and slashed the victim’s hand after the victim knocked Bergland’s hat bearing President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan to the ground, police said.
The victim and another man briefly pursued Bergland but stopped after Bergland turned on them and brandished the sword, police said.

Police didn’t release the victim’s name. The victim was treated and released from a hospital, police said.
Jail records don’t indicate if Bergland is represented by an attorney.
Scott Sweeney told the San Francisco Chronicle that he was in the same neighbourhood about 30 minutes before the incident and saw a man with a MAGA hat and a sword tucked into the back of his jacket.
The man, Sweeney said, was shouting homophobic slurs at him. “In my mind I didn’t think it was a real sword until we came out later and police were on the scene and there was blood and the hat on ground,” he said.
David Miles, who runs the roller rink at the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church, said he didn’t see the attack but ran out to help the victim.
Miles said officers asked him if a man dressed as a pirate had come into the roller rink, but he hadn’t seen anyone like that.

’OUR COUNTRY IS FULL’: Trump says migrants straining immigration system

CALEXICO, Calif. — Declaring “our country is full,” President Donald Trump on Friday insisted the U.S. immigration system was overburdened and illegal crossings must be stopped as he inspected a refurbished section of fencing at the Mexican border.
Trump, making a renewed push for border security as a central campaign issue for his 2020 re-election, participated in a briefing on immigration and border security in Calexico before viewing a 2-mile (3.2-kilometre) see-through steel-slat barrier that was a long-planned replacement for an older barrier — and not new wall.
“There is indeed an emergency on our southern border,” Trump said at the briefing, adding that there has been a sharp uptick in illegal crossings. “It’s a colossal surge and it’s overwhelming our immigration system, and we can’t let that happen. … We can’t take you anymore. We can’t take you. Our country is full.”
As Air Force One touched down in the state, California and 19 other states that are suing Trump over his emergency declaration to build a border wall requested a court order to stop money from being diverted to fund the project. But Trump, who ratcheted up his hard-line immigration rhetoric in recent weeks, declared that his move, which included vetoing a congressional vote, was necessary.
Also on Friday, House Democrats filed a lawsuit preventing Trump from spending more money than Congress has approved to erect barriers along the southwestern border. Congress approved just under $1.4 billion for work on border barricades. Trump has asserted he can use his powers as chief executive to transfer an additional $6.7 billion to wall construction.
Trump, who earlier in the week threatened to shut down the border over the high numbers of migrants trying to enter the U.S., appeared to walk back his comments Thursday. He said Friday that it was because Mexico had gotten tougher in stopping an influx of immigrants from moving north.
“Mexico has been absolutely terrific for the last four days,” the president said as he left the White House. “I never changed my mind at all. I may shut it down at some point.”

The president’s visit came a day after he withdrew his nominee to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Longtime border official Ron Vitiello appeared to be cruising toward confirmation, but Trump said Friday that he wanted to go in a “tougher direction.”
Trump, as he so often does, mixed fact with fiction when warning of the threat at the border. When complaining about the Flores legal settlement that governs treatment of migrant children and families, he blamed “Judge Flores, whoever you may be.” But Flores was an unaccompanied 15-year-old girl from El Salvador.
He also downplayed the claims of people seeking asylum at the border, declaring without evidence that many are gang members while comparing some of their efforts to find safety in the U.S. to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.
“It’s a scam, it’s a hoax,” Trump said. “I know about hoaxes. I just went through a hoax.”
As the president showed off the renovated section of the barrier to reporters, a balloon depicting Trump as a baby floated further down the border. And as Trump landed in California, the state’s governor ripped the president’s push for Congress to pass legislation that would tighten asylum rules to make it harder for people to qualify.
“Since our founding, this country has been a place of refuge — a safe haven for people fleeing tyranny, oppression and violence. His words show a total disregard of the Constitution, our justice system, and what it means to be an American,” said Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Trump has been increasingly exasperated at his inability to halt the swelling number of migrants entering the U.S., including thousands who have been released after arriving because border officials have no space for them. Arrests along the southern border have skyrocketed in recent months, and border agents were on track to make 100,000 arrests or denials of entry in March, a 12-year high. More than half of those are families with children, who require extra care.
The southern border is nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometres) long and already has about 650 miles (1,050 kilometres) of different types of barriers, including short vehicle barricades and tall steel fences that go up to 30 feet (9 metres) high. Most of the fencing was built during George W. Bush’s administration, and there have been updates and maintenance throughout other administrations.
Trump has yet to complete any new mileage of fencing or other barriers anywhere on the border, though he declared Friday that at least 400 miles (650 kilometres) of the border barrier would be erected over the next two years. His administration so far has only replaced existing fencing. Construction for that small chunk of fencing cost about $18 million, began in February 2018 and was completed in October. Plans to replace that fence date back to 2009, during President Barack Obama’s tenure.
Administration officials had been studying ways to minimize the economic impact of a potential border closure in case Trump went through with his threat, including keeping trucking lanes open or closing only certain ports.

But even absent that extraordinary step, delays at border stations have been mounting after some 2,000 border officers were reassigned from checking vehicles to deal with migrant crowds.
After the border visit, Trump travelled to Los Angeles for a pair of fundraisers in the deeply liberal city. He was then set to travel to Las Vegas for another re-election fundraiser and an address to the Republican Jewish Coalition, which is backed by GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson.

For the past two years, city of Toronto officials and the Toronto police have permitted an anti-Israel hatefest to take place right under their noses in a city park and along University Ave.

(Yes- there is a LONG LIE-beral history of shrugging off hateful behaviour by Muslims while condemning Jews simply for defending themselves from Muslims!)

To make the absurdity of the city’s political foot-dragging worse, the Al Quds Day rally took place — for two years in a row — illegally in the park, located to the north of Queen’s Park.

(Such stuff is standard for LIE-berals! One has only to think of the native group that marched on foot up an ramp and out onto Gardner Expressway during rush hour a few years back! And they certainly did NOT have a permit!! LIE-berals have been highly selective - for decades now - as to which laws they will enforce!)

(WE have only to look at the two Ontari-owe reporters who produced an article published in main stream media- telling us that there was nothing but Radical Islamic writing on Cdn Muslim school and Mosque websites! And the two reporters- and their lawyers on retainer- supplied by the corporation that printed the article - were ignored by LIE-berals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Yet LIE-berals arrested a Mississauga man for offering cash to anybody who could provide verified proof of Islamic hate speech taking place in side Cdn Mosques! After two years of excuses — in response to two requests from Cllr. James Pasternak — another report that says nothing and offers to do nothing has been placed on the agenda of Thursday’s executive committee.

It was penned by Omo Akintan, a lawyer and executive director of the city’s people, equity and human rights section who made $174,423.00 last year.

My goodness, City Hall’s highly-paid bureaucrats have no shame.

(There is no permit for the group- and WE KNOW that LIE-berals would shut down and break up a white group telling us that Muslims living in Canada should be “driven into the sea”!!! Yet LIE-beals have NO PROBLEM with Muslims advocating that Israelis be driven into the sea!!!!!!!!!!!! )

It says the consultation determined that city policies “already prohibit the promotion of hate or discriminatory behaviour on city property” and that “public gatherings that promote hate and incite discrimination from taking place on city property … are currently prohibited by the city’s policies.”

Okay then. What have they done about Al Quds day?

Well, uh, nothing.

Last year’s rally, an official event sanctioned by the Iranian regime, included demonstrators waving the Hezbollah flag and calls by a sheikh from Kitchener’s Islamic Humanitarian Service for the “eradication” of Israelis.

B’nai Brith CEO Michael Mostyn — frustrated that nothing had been done by the city or police to stop it — told the executive committee last year that there’s no mistake this rally is hateful.

In the end, all Akintan’s long-awaited report does is pass the buck — to the police and the provincial attorney general.

The mayor’s spokesman Don Peat said his boss is not satisfied with the report.

“He’s discussed it with Councillor Pasternak and they both feel the report didn’t answer questions that they raised and asked staff to answer,” Peat said.

The hate aside, certainly the city has the tools to clamp down on the rally considering its organizers occupied a city park without a permit.

Pasternak says this kind of hate group costs the city hundreds of thousands of dollars because they pay none of the fees associated with lane closures, TTC route disruption, event clean up and security.

But even questions about that resulted in a maddening back-and-forth with city spokesman Brad Ross Wednesday.

He at first said permits are required for a gathering of 25 people or more — however a permit for a protest in a city park is not issued by the city. He also said some rallies and protests are “spontaneous.”

When I pointed out that the Al Quds Day hatefest was certainly not spontaneous, he said permits for protests are issued by the police.

It was a rally — and a hateful one at that. Even Akintan’s ridiculous report calls it a rally.

No wonder City Hall never gets things done.

His administration so far has only replaced existing fencing. Construction for that small chunk of fencing cost about $18 million, began in February 2018 and was completed in October. Plans to replace that fence date back to 2009, during President Barack Obama’s tenure.
Administration officials had been studying ways to minimize the economic impact of a potential border closure in case Trump went through with his threat, including keeping trucking lanes open or closing only certain ports.

But even absent that extraordinary step, delays at border stations have been mounting after some 2,000 border officers were reassigned from checking vehicles to deal with migrant crowds.
After the border visit, Trump travelled to Los Angeles for a pair of fundraisers in the deeply liberal city. He was then set to travel to Las Vegas for another re-election fundraiser and an address to the Republican Jewish Coalition, which is backed by GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A Chinese woman recently arrested at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club has been charged with unlawful entry of restricted buildings and making false statements.
The charges against 32-year-old Yujing Zhang are contained in an indictment filed in federal court in South Florida on Friday.
Zhang faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of the false statements count. If convicted of unlawful entry, she faces a maximum sentence of a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.
Secret Service agents arrested Zhang two weeks ago after they say she gained admission to Mar-a-Lago by falsely telling a checkpoint she was a member. Prosecutors say she was carrying computer malware and an electronic device that detects hidden cameras.

HONG KONG — With the blond wig and red tie, the star of the Cantonese opera in Hong Kong may look familiar.
The Chinese actor and singer has the lead role in Trump on Show, a four-day comedic opera re-imagining the U.S. president’s personal life and his fictional twin brother who lives in China.
The three-hour opera opens with America’s first family moving into the White House, where Trump’s daughter Ivanka discovers an old suitcase. Inside she finds an English version of The Little Red Book, which details ideas on class struggle by the founding chairman of modern communist China.
In the show, Donald Trump goes to China and meets Mao and Zhou En-lai, the first premier of communist China. Trump also receives a visit from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the U.S.

Li Kui-Ming, a 64-year-old feng shui master turned Cantonese opera playwright, explains that his 34th opera piece does not aim to focus on serious international politics. Rather, the show simply uses current political characters to grab the audience’s attention.

“It could definitely draw people’s attention if the play is about popular political figures due to their popularity and influence. I hope this opera will get my ideas across to the audience,” he said.
He hopes that one day, Trump on Show could even be performed at the White House or in Pyongyang for Kim Jong Un.
“This is definitely our dream,” Li said.
The opera runs until Monday at the Sunbeam Theatre, one of Hong Kong’s long-established traditional Cantonese opera venues, created in 1972.

“This opera has to be performed in Cantonese, but of course there will be some English in it,” said Loong Koon-tin, a Cantonese actor with more than 40 years of stage experience, who plays Trump. “I will certainly portray Trump’s special characteristics. I will wear a red tie and suit, with a blond hair wig and golden eyebrows. Apart from the appearance, I will also imitate the way he talks as well as his body language.”
Roger Chan, a Cantonese actor who plays Kim, said they did a lot of research on the North Korean leader. “We try to get to know him through daily news reports,” he said.
“I think the theme is very fresh, original and unimaginable because it must be difficult to use traditional Cantonese opera elements and performing methods to perform and interpret the role of these modern world-leading characters,” said Chan Chi-kai, who came to see the show as a loyal fan of the playwright.

Democrats subpoena banks as they probe Donald Trump's finances

WASHINGTON — Two House committees subpoenaed Deutsche Bank and several other financial institutions Monday as part of investigations into President Donald Trump’s finances.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said in a statement that the subpoenas are part of an investigation “into allegations of potential foreign influence on the U.S. political process.”
Schiff did not name the other financial institutions or describe the subpoenas.
House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said in a separate statement that “the potential use of the U.S. financial system for illicit purposes is a very serious concern.” She said her committee is looking into those matters, including whether they pertain to Trump.
It was unclear exactly what the committees asked for. The investigations are among several House Democrats are conducting into aspects of the president’s personal and political life, and Schiff has said he is investigating whether foreign actors, including Russia, have sought to hold leverage over Trump or his family and associates.

As part of his investigation, Schiff has said he wants to know whether Russians used laundered money for transactions with the Trump Organization. Trump’s businesses have benefited from Russian investment over the years.
Deutsche Bank is a German asset management firm that has lent Trump’s real estate organization millions of dollars over time. The two committees have been working with the bank for several weeks, and both Waters and Schiff have said officials have been co-operative. Schiff said in his statement that the subpoena to Deutsche Bank is a “friendly” subpoena, meaning he expects them to continue working with the committees.
The request comes as a third committee, the House Ways and Means Committee, is sparring with the White House over Trump’s tax returns.
House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., has set a deadline of April 23 for six years of returns. But Trump’s acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, has said Democrats will “never” see the returns, “nor should they,” and “they know it.”

NEW YORK — A Florida man who pleaded guilty to sending pipe bombs to prominent critics of President Donald Trump will be sentenced in August rather than September.
U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff on Monday set an Aug. 5 date to determine the penalty for Cesar Sayoc after his lawyer said Sayoc was anxious to know the outcome.
The 57-year-old Sayoc could face life in prison for spreading terror in the days leading up to the midterm election last year.
Sayoc has been held without bail since his late-October arrest outside a South Florida auto parts store.
Authorities say he targeted numerous Democrats, including former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama and CNN.
