Home invasion survivor: I was against guns, now I carry

It's always nice to see when somebody goes from Crazy to Sane.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Nearly eighteen years ago, Mike and Susan Gonzalez had a life changing experience.

"August will be 18 years and I still live with it everyday," said Susan.

Her home now has burglar bars and there are no trespassing signs posted on her North Jacksonville property.

It was around 12:40 a.m. when she heard a rustling sound at the front door. Gonzalez said she left the couch to unlock the front door for her son when someone kicked the door in.

"It came off the hinges and I took off running and screaming," she recalled. "My husband was asleep in the bedroom."

Two masked men had invaded her home. Susan was shot.

"I kind of knew I was dying, so I was making my peace with God," she said.

Her husband was shot as he struggled with one of the attackers. Gonzalez said she saw an opportunity to reach for her husband's pistol and she went for it. She said she pointed the gun at one of the suspects and squeezed the trigger.

"I just opened fire in his back," she said.

The wounded suspect died in the couple's front yard. The other suspect took the keys to their truck and got away, but he was later captured.

Susan, 56, said what happened that hot August night has changed her views completely on guns.

"A lot of people are against guns because they say guns kill, " said Gonzalez. "Guns saved my life and I was against guns. I now carry."

She has a concealed weapons permit and said she practices on a regular basis.

"What happened to us, I would never in a million years would have dreamed it would happen to us,' she said.

Gonzalez turned the tables on her attacker and lived to talk about it.

On July 6, her story is being featured in the Discovery Channel's "OVER MY DEAD BODY" series.

She hopes it will encourage others to protect themselves.

"I can only hope that another woman or even man will take a look and realize there's a reason to have guns for safety," she said.

She said many have criticized her for shooting the suspect, but she said what she did was to save her family.

"Anyone that is a victim never expects to be a victim," said Gonzalez. "You should be prepared."

18 years ago....boy you really had to reach for that article.

Carrying a gun increases risk of getting shot and killed - science-in-society - 06 October 2009 - New Scientist""

''Dspite the US having the highest rate of firearms-related homicide in the industrialised world, the relationship between gun culture and violence is poorly understood. A recent study found that treating violence like an infectious disease led to a dramatic fall in shootings and killings.

Overall, Branas's study found that people who carried guns were 4.5 times as likely to be shot and 4.2 times as likely to get killed compared with unarmed citizens. When the team looked at shootings in which victims had a chance to defend themselves, their odds of getting shot were even higher.'

Just in case you do not feel inclined to read the whole article.

Here is another study confirming the first. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2759797/

That makes perfect sense, unarmed folks don't normally attend gun fights.

Really...So you feel gun fights are planned events?? How weird is that. I was under the impression, the only folks who regularly hold planned gun fights are governments at war, starting a war or protecting the country from aggression.

Has a country reinstituted the gunslingers' showdown at noon on a western main street that I missed?? Hope they show a rerun on TV in all it's bloody gory. hahaha.

Northern Ontario,
Conveniently closed your eyes when you came to that line in your own cherry picked article didn't you....
There....I'll make it bigger so your advanced age poor eyesight can read it
"We don't have an answer as to whether guns are protective or perilous," Branas says. "This study is a beginning."

Carry on..................

I'm sure that being armed all of the time gives one the illusion of invincibility, unless you are an armed professional ( soldier, etc.) who knows that they are mortals, too.

Here is another study confirming the first. Investigating the Link Between Gun Possession and Gun Assault

The study by Branas et al.1 contains errors in design and execution that make it difficult to determine the meaning of their findings.

Their study assessed risk for being assaulted and then shot, a compound outcome event whose second element (being shot) is not inevitable given the first (being assaulted). Persons who were assaulted but not shot are not studied. We do not know whether any association between firearm possession and their outcome measure applies to assault, to being shot given an assault, or both.

The study does not control for time and place. The authors invoke stray bullets to argue that residents of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are at equal risk for being shot, no matter where they are and what they are doing. This ignores the fact that violence is not randomly distributed and is unfair to Philadelphia.

The control group is inappropriate, as was probably guaranteed by its selection from all adult Philadelphians. There were large differences between case participants and control participants in prior criminal history and alcohol or drug involvement, all of which influence gun-carrying behavior and risk for violent victimization. Personal and geographic differences compounded one another: 83% of shootings occurred outdoors, yet while those shootings were occuring, 91% of control participants, arguably at lower risk already for personal reasons, were indoors. A list could easily be made of likely differences between case participants and control participants that were not addressed.

The problems with geography and control selection are not insurmountable. A classic study of alcohol use among adult pedestrian fatalities in Manhattan enrolled the first 4 pedestrians reaching the site where the fatality occurred “on a subsequent date, but on the same day of the week and at a time as close as possible to the exact time of day of the accident [italics retained]”2(p657) as control participants for each case participant.

Branas et al. have omitted critical detail from their results. Assaults can be independent of any prior relationship between perpetrator and victim—a would-be robber spies a prospect emerging from a bar—or can occur in the context of, and perhaps because of, some prior relationship. The association between gun possession and risk of being assaulted or shot may differ greatly between these 2 types of encounters. Attacks by strangers are common, accounting for 50.5% of robberies and aggravated assaults reported by males and 34.7% of those reported by females.3 The authors should present separate results for assaults independent of and related to prior personal involvement between victims and shooters.

Wow!

Are you Buffalo Bill or Annie Oakley?

Fastest gun in Pittsboig?
Nope. My usual is a li'l ol' 9mm I keep in a hip pocket holster. Like this:

See? Tucks down completely inside the hip pocket, looks like a wallet:

That way, when somebody shoves a gun in your face and says "Gimme your wallet" you can reach into your hip pocket like you're doing just what he says, and put three in him before he can react.

The opportunity to get in three rounds from a 9mm at point-blank range is what I call "a chance."

Y'all go ahead and exercise your feeble wit all you like. A woman was killed in a home invasion robbery less than a mile from where I live. One of my neighbors was robbed in our parking lot.

I ain't saying you should carry a gun. For that matter, given your attitude, I'd recommend against it. But it's your choice. And for me, it's my choice.

I know that hurts you. Sorry bout that.

The authors conclude that “on average, guns did not protect those who possessed them from being shot in an assault” and that successful defensive gun uses are unlikely. In fact, none of the evidence presented by the authors actually has any relevance to the issue of the effectiveness of defensive gun use, for the simple reason that at no point do they ever compare crime victims who used guns defensively with victims who did not. Instead, they made only the essentially irrelevant comparison between people who were shot in assaults with the rest of the population, noting whether gun possession was more common among the former than among the latter. Not surprisingly, after controlling for a handful of (badly chosen) control variables, they found that gun possession is more common among gunshot victims.

Something with a barrel that short would be about as accurate as a Bedoin sling. I suppose that you could always throw the gun atthe bad guy. Either that or put it right up against his body and pull the trigger.

Betcha can't do that.

Damn nice holster, though.
