Green Peace Activists Arrested

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have arrested 16 Greenpeace protesters, including 13 who had chained themselves to a Shell oilsands upgrader plant in northern Alberta.
Police moved in around 5:30 a.m. Sunday, 24 hours after the activists scaled three smokestacks and a construction crane at the Scottford upgrader expansion near Fort Saskatchewan.

....

Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach called the protesters "lawbreakers" who were "putting people on the job site at risk." Shell officials echoed that sentiment, saying Saturday they hoped to meet with any activists thinking of targeting its facilities.
"We reiterate our wish that Greenpeace and all other who have concerns with our activities would talk to us face to face instead of using confrontational and unsafe tactics," the company said in a statement.
The protest came after about 20 Greenpeace activists were arrested at a Suncor oilsands plant near Fort McMurray, Alta. a couple of weeks ago.

Greenpeace puts themselves and others at risk with stunts like this because it makes headlines and causes discussions. This one for example. If they kept it legal and just met with big oil, it wouldn't even make the local newspaper and lead nowhere.

I subscribed to greenpeace a long time ago when whale hunting was still allowed.

The oil sands are dirty, but they are also critical to Canada's future. I want to see Canada exploit these resources in as environmentally friendly way as possible.

Good. Greenpeace doesn't care a iota about jobs and families. They are dupes to the AGW lobby, without the character or intellect, to realize they are being used by malevolent interests. Ultimately they discredit what in good about environmental movement by threatening people's livelihoods. Maybe a few days in jail will help them come to their senses.

Highly unlikely.

Put them to work cutting timber in the Temagami forest. They'll have insider info where the spiked trees are

Perhaps acting as monitors to ensure federal and provincial environmental laws are not breached by tar sands' development would be a legitimate role for environmental activists. We need strong voices to temper resource exploitation.

Aren't they always being arrested for something? And they won't stop after this is over either.

A bunch of protesters blocked a road that was being built here one time. The gov't and a forest compnay was building it, they built about 7 kliks of it. One guy, Les was telling me, was coming down with a load of logs and these morons got in the way so he put the clutch in and yelled out the window "no brakes". Les said they scattered like fish in front of a dolphin. lol
But, the protesters had their way and the place that was to be logged was turned into park. It burned in 2003. It was a waste of some 21 million taxpayers and private dollars. The Dippers are good at wasting money.
