In various announcements made today, The Honourable Loyola Hearn, P.C., M.P., the Member for St. John's South—Mount Pearl and the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, presented a strategy from the Government of Canada to bridge the void between the management and status of cod stocks between the industry, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
The Minister set forth a strategy to create a Northern Cod Science and Fisheries Stewardship Initiative, which is to establish a small, one-year-long fisheries pilot project in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and to set in motion other research projects, providing funds in the area of 1.2 million dollars (+CA$1 200 000) for such purposes.
