A three-year-old boy in China is being treated for parasites after his mother tried a traditional cure for his seizures: feeding him live frogs.
The child is in hospital, as doctors warn others to avoid similar traditional treatments.
According to the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, the mother told doctors her son had been suffering from convulsions.
Her friends advised she try feeding him live frogs. So at the end of July, the boy's grandfather captured three small frogs from a nearby field and the family pinned the boy down and forced him to swallow each one, while they were still wriggling.
Instead of curing his seizures, the boy grew masses on his stomach and scrotum.
Doctors have since removed tapeworms from the masses, but it will be some time before they know if they got them all.
Sparganum worms can live up to 20 years in the human body.
