A Michigan man who has a 75-pound growth in his scrotum is hoping strangers on the Internet will help him raise $20,000 for surgery to remove it.
Dan Maurer, 39, has scrotal lymphedema. He told the Lansing State Journal he noticed his scrotum was getting larger about five years ago, but doctors suggested if he lost weight, the condition would improve. When he became ill, doctors found a cyst inside his scrotum.
The disease, which is rare outside Asia and Africa, is caused by blocked lymphatic vessels that drain the scrotum.
Maurer said the problem really affects his back and he's "pretty much in pain the whole time."
He has booked an appointment with a specialist in California at the end of July. But he said he cannot afford the surgery on his own and it's not covered by insurance.
He's turned to a crowd-funding website to help raise the money for surgery.
