Orca's will attack ANYTHING that threatens their young, or that threatens their pod.

There is no shark alive that would stand a chance against a full grown Orca. And, you also have to factor in the intelligence of the Orca. The shark made a HUGE mistake in turning toward the mother with her baby.

I didn't think it was possible for an orca to kill a great white shark. They are heavier & longer but the jaws of the great white are larger. Perhaps the shark was sick or too old to put up a fight. You don't really know but it sure was an interesting vid.

There is an orca jawbone on the pier at Telegraph Cove on Vancouver Island. It takes a bit of muscle just to move it. It's like moving a log. I can't imagine how powerful it must be when connected by muscle and ligaments to an angry creature.

Thing is, the intelligence is the main factor and orcas have two ways of killing sharks. They can bite (with teeth up to 7" long and force of 18 tons per square inch) and they can ram (a common defense tactic against sharks that members of the dolphin family use). Sharks have only one way of killing and they are very succeptible to paralysis after being rammed and flipped upside diown. Especially by a 3.5 ton (average weight of a female) orca doing a speed of 50 km/hr.
