Hello Everyone,

This is a great forum and it’s good to see diverse information on Canada ranging from Politics to immigration to culture.

I am presently in India and my Canadian passport expires in March 2011.

I am planning to travel to Canada in Feb 2011 (1 month before) and renew the passport via the simplified renewal application process. Do you believe this would be a good idea or should I renew my Canadian passport in India itself?

Will I be allowed to travel to Canada as the passport expiry date is near and can any please comment on the time taken for the simplified renewal process?

Thanks again for your guidance and support.

The passport's valid until the day it expires, that should have no effect on whether you're allowed to travel if you're coming back to Canada. You'd have a problem if you were leaving Canada and your passport expired during your absence, but coming home shouldn't be a problem. I've no idea how long the simplified renewal process takes, I've never tried it, but even the former process didn't take very long, a week or two at most. It's probably easier, faster, and cheaper to renew it in Canada, if you're in a city where there's a passport office.

The process shouldn't take that long: I got mine in about 2 weeks in late 2008 and I was expired for 5 years, so I had to start from scratch. A current renewal should be relatively quick I would think. If you're worried at all though, contact the nearest consulate or embassy and they should be able to help you.

I'd say it would depend on whether you would like the trip or not.

It has taken me few days to renew my Canadian passport in China; I have heard that it takes much longer in Canada to receive a new document .
