Immigration - Visa/Sponsorship Info Needed (Immigration Sponsorship)

Hi All,

Hopefully somebody here can help me...

My girlfriend lives in Edmonton (she's a Canadian citizen) and I am coming over at the end of September to live with her.
I can get in to Canada for 6 months on my british passport but where I go from there is a complete mystery at the moment!

I've been looking into the immigration process and my options now, full time for a few weeks. I don't qualify as a skilled worker but that still leaves me two options as far as I know..

Sponsorship as a conjugal partner (not sure if we would qualify) or to obtain a work permit for which I know I require a job offer prior to applying.

I've already applied for a number of Sales related jobs as that's my background and been turned down on the basis that I'm not currently a Canadian resident. Although every rejection has been accompanied by positive comments if I were a resident, this is obviously looking like a one-way street.

If anybody could possibly give me any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

it's a lot easier if you're married to a Canadian. I'm married to a newfie and we're in the process of moving now. I havent got my visa yet but i've been told i should go anyway and when it arrives I can jump over the border to the US and come back again any time before my six months visiting time is up. The application is expensive and laborious but nothing should really stand in your way unless you have a horrible disease or a criminal record or your wife(or you) is too poor to support you.

I too am moving to Edmonton either before xmas or just after, my husband is from there and I lived there for 2 years before returning to the UK, he is here with me now and we are just starting the process of our PR, here is a little advice.
Make sure when you do go across the border that the immigration officer does not think you have no intention of returning to you country of residence, its not a good idea to mention that you are going to apply for PR, once you are in Canada you will need to apply straight away, once you apply for PR you will then be classed as implied status, you may be able to extend your visa for another 6 months, and more likely if in implied status, but they can also refuse your visa and be sent back home. If you are going to apply while in Canada, you can still do an outside application, if your from the UK do your medicals and security check before you leave for Canada, as if you do an outside application you will need to send these off straight away with your application. Your medicals last for a year and some places have a waiting list of a few weeks before you get an appointment. This is the link to the doctors in your area that do the medicals for immigration -- It is possible to get a medical done in Canada An outside application through the London office takes on average 3 - 9 months to complete, an inside application will take over a year.
As a common law partner your partner can sponsor you but you will need to show that you have been living together by proof of things like joint bank accounts, utility bills, lease/rent agreement or property agreement. insurance / will in each others name, joint credit card, letters, the list is endless, for more info go to --, here you will find all the forms you need and information, there is a very good immigration forum I use also at -- there are lots of pple going through the same thing as you on there.

I've already started the application so it's best if i tell them the truth. they might have trouble believing i'm flying to canada with toasters and a computer and knives and forks etc and not intending to stay!

The minute they think u are not going to leave the country they will refuse you, immigration officers do not look kindly on people trying to enter the country and not having any intention on leaving, you can send for your stuff later, but honestly if they think at all you wont leave they can and most likely will refuse you entry, you might get lucky and get one that will look the other way, but very unlikely. My husband is going back to Canada for his job and we will be here in the UK for however long it takes to get the PR, I was thinking of going over xmas and then staying there, the only problem I have is that I wont be able to work and we need to save, if I was going to go to stay even with the application in I would not tell them my intentions were not to leave again, once you get to the border if they ask if you have a PR application in be honest, but don’t volunteer it, my fiend was in Canada, she overstayed and they sent her packing, she is back there now, but with PR status, like I said Canada is NOT a soft touch, they are more strict nowadays because of how many pple try to go there and not leave, be assured you are taking a risk.

Whats this medical thing? Do you need one?I never needed one to get into australia.Is it best to have it in uk and apply for visa in the uk ? thanks

I am moving to Calgary next year with my husband and son, my husband is a police officer so once he had job offer we could start the visa process.
we also need to have a medical and they are not cheap

Well Darren the first thing to do is avoid outfits like the above like the plague.
They just rip of your cash for doing nothing you couldnt do yourself.

Right now Canada is about the easiest country in the west to get into.
Read the Government of Canada immigration sites and go to the Canadian immagration forums.
Listen carefully to people like Carmoral.
Find other people like Carmoral and print out their advice and responses to your questions.
If you cannot get in via points you may be left with no alternative but to get married.
Possibly a degree would do it as well if the thought of marrage makes you jumpy.
It will cost you a few quid for all the required forms and medical.

I am presently working out of Humberside but am Canadian.

I'll second Trex's comments.

My wife got her Canadian PR a couple of years ago, and we ended up spending a lot more money having a lawyer involved than was necessary - all they did was look over our file and compare it to the instructions included in the applications.
