This is pretty funny really. Here's a list of the 10 Most Dangerous
Cities on the planet, according to "Real Clear World." It runs through
London (England) to the worst as being Mogadishu (Somalia). Our own
Saskatoon (Saskatchewan, Canada) hit the list at number nine.

Saskatoon: The world's ninth-most dangerous city?
Comparing Saskatoon to cities with ethnic cleansing "sheer lunacy," police chief says
Source: --

SASKATOON — Apparently, Saskatoon’s two homicides last year make Saskatoon
too scary for one news website.

The website RealClearWorld.com has named Saskatoon the ninth-most dangerous
city in the world, according to a feature posted Sunday.

The list is intended to highlight troubled places beyond headline-dominating violent
hotspots, such as Baghdad and Kandahar, the editors explain.

Other cities with the dubious distinction include Johannesburg in seventh place,
Detroit in fifth place and the Somalian capital Mogadishu at the top of the list.

The website explains Saskatoon earned its place on the list after Maclean’s
magazine ranked the bridge city as the most dangerous in Canada. That analysis,
based on per-capita crime statistics from 2007, found Saskatoon had the highest
rate of aggravated assault and robbery in the country, and was fourth in homicides
and sex assaults. Saskatoon’s mayor and police dismissed the report as misleading
and out of date.

“The tourism industry of Saskatchewan (if there is such a thing) probably isn’t
too pleased with Maclean’s,” RealClearWorld.com writes in its page on Saskatoon.
The short blurb is accompanied by a YouTube video of footage from a vehicle
driving through downtown Saskatoon, with the 1960s Petula Clark song
“Downtown” playing in the background.

Saskatoon Police Chief Clive Weighill says putting Saskatoon on a list with cities that
need military intervention to stop ethnic cleansing is “ridiculous.”

“To even remotely compare Saskatoon to that is sheer lunacy,” he said.’

He points out Saskatoon had just two murders in 2008, and that a recent civic
survey found only 18 per cent of residents said policing and crime was the most
pressing issue.

Even compared to other Canadian cities, Saskatoon fares well, Weighill said. B.C.’s
Lower Mainland has seen 15 homicides and 36 shootings in the last 1 1/2 months
alone, he said. Calgary and Edmonton, meanwhile, have each asked for more than
200 police officers to help curb gang violence.

RealClearWorld.com describes itself as a “catch-all” source for global news,
commentary and more. There is no information posted about where the site is
based.

Saskatoon is more dangerous than San Paulo, Brazil, or Lima, Peru, for example, only if you are worried about frostbite!

And you can't run away.

Well, you can, but you can't hide. At least not for a couple of weeks, till you cross the horizon.

Vancouver might usurp Saskatoon's place next year.

Gang bangers killing gang bangers.

Not a bad idea, actually.

Just cool the collateral damage.

I think it's on a per capita basis here guys...

Kind of like Kewick Ontario being the murder capital of Canada some years ago.

It had two murders in one year, but the population was so low, it made the place a bad place.

Aren't statistics just grand.

When I lived in saskatoon I had my block heater cord stolen. I've never been able to get over it.

That was here in Regina which would probably be 11 on the list. Oh and the torn open garbage bags in the dumpsters from bottle hunters is a big concern.

So far today, there has not been any reported new murders in Vancouver. However, I have not listened to the news yet so that could change. I doubt there is any city more dangerous than Vancouver right now. Pretty scary.

Maybe it was the same person that stole my Jack-O-Lantern a couple years ago. I was truly devastated!

Thunder Bay had two murders one year and also became Canada's murder capital.

Saskatoon has just two clear and present dangers: frostbite and mosquito bites. Fortunately they do not occur simultaneaously....

Vancouver & area stats for sometime in Janusary this year:
Culpable homicide 3
Attempted murder 1
Sexual offences 44
Assaults 444
Robbery 138
Total Violent crimes = 630 in January according to VCPD - --

Homicide went waaay up in Feb. I think it doubled or tripled. And Saskatoon had 2? I wonder who researched the material for their stats.

It is by populus and taken out of context. There is about 8 or 9 Saskatoons to make one GVRD...or one good muffin.

The OP said that Saskatoon is one of the 9th most dangerous cities in the world. Size of the city is irrelevant. London is bigger and has a much larger population and yet they said it is less dangerous. Detroit is much bigger and yet they said it was more dangerous.
