Hey all,

I was reading a PDF stating that, in Saskatchewan, PST is only applied on some products. I then found a leaflet from Safeway and was quite surprised to see no mention of PST besides most of the prices -- only some products read "$xx + tax". So - do you or don't you pay tax on (most of the) food?

No, we don't. PST is applied to non-edible things, junk food, and some things that are edible but not intended for human consumption, like pet food. Sometimes it depends on quantity. If I buy a dozen bran muffins, they're not taxed, but if I buy one, it is. The logic there is that small quantities of some things are considered confectionery, i.e. snack or junk food, which is taxed. In general though, food (real food, not junk food) is not taxed.

I never got my head around PST/GST and HST, Although I would wonder how many countries do their tax like this?...I know the states do as well, I'm sure Australia and NZ, as well as the UK dont (of course that would beg the question "do you actually know how much tax ur paying?" to them).

But to me, as a Bilyati (Blighty - Foreigner) I was just purplexed by the "99c!!!.......oh and pssst. a few more for tax!!)...anyone see what I mean?, it cant help old people surely?

In New Zealand, "what you see is what you pay" - the sales tax (called GST in Kiwiland) has already been included in the price being displayed.

Consumption taxes are great. They generate large revenues for government.

For example:

If the GST is at 7%, the federal government will make $35 billion.

If the GST is at 6%, the federal government will make $30 billion.

Are you saying that the British government is charging you 17.5% consumption tax?

That's alot. I don't think any province or territory in Canada has consumption taxes that high.

OMG!

That's outrageous! 14% is fair. 25% is just overtaxing.

nah you dont, see the problem is, because it's done at government/business level and already incorporated in when you buy (there's no + tax or excluding tax or VAT as we just simply say), it makes it even more complicated and it makes stuff in canada (well for me it did) seem more expensive......even when it isnt.
