Point: We needed to suspend refugees from accessing this country over national security concerns

By: Brad Wall, Premier of Saskatchewan

As I have said an open letter to the Prime Minister that I wrote a little more than a year ago, security must be a number one priority when it comes to refugees. That is why I bravely advocated for a temporary ban of all 25,000 Syrian refugees from entering Canada because of the risk of terrorism. We would resume accepting refugees once I was satisfied that the perceived problems within the government’s refugee program was fixed.

Let me remind you that 129 people died in an attack in Paris from terrorists posing as refugees. Sure, the majority of those displaced people trying to move to Canada are probably fleeing violence and not a threat, but you can’t be so sure. It only takes one with ill-intentions and the results could be devastating. The terrorists are crafty like that, so now is not the time to be politically correct.

Counterpoint: Forget about what I said last year, I really like refugees now

By: Brad Wall, Premier of Saskatchewan

I’m very saddened to see that the United States has moved to ban refugees from seven countries and I would like to remind everyone that Saskatchewan will offer any support by those stranded by the ban. And, while you’re at it, could you forget about what I said above? That never happened.

I can’t tell you how much I love refugees now. We already have 2,000 of them in our province and we’ll continue to support these people because it’s the right thing to do. I wouldn’t want to be a leader that exploits fear and hate so I could score a few points against my political rivals such as the Prime Minister.

I don’t know where US President Donald Trump would get the idea of arbitrarily banning someone just because of their origins.

No, regardless of Trump's crazy ban, terror attacks on Mosques in Quebec... taking more refugees is not the answer. JT ends to listen to the people. Give them whatever!! billions to help them rebuild, send our Doctors, Red Cross, but do it over there.

Well at the moment all Justin is talking about are those stranded by the ban, Remington. I'm with him and the Premiers who have stepped up to do so. Canada has already committed to taking in more refugees, I can't see Justin back tracking on that promise. As we post here, vetted refugees are coming into our country. That is not going to stop. Apparently, the Canadian tech community is petitioning the Feds to allow banned American techies to request immigrant status as they could put them to work right away.

Not surprised, Eagle.........but I'm sure there are a couple who will.

Juxtaposition

So which of these quotes conflating immigration with terrorism is from the autocrat provoking protests around the world for his widely-acknowledged lack of human decency...
[The leader] is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering [his country] until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on.
...
[The leader] stated, "Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life."
...and which one is from the premier currently trying to get in front of the parade headed in the opposite direction only when it suits his political interests?
[If] even a small number of individuals who wish to do harm to our country are able to enter [it] as a result of a rushed refugee resettlement process, the results could be devastating. The recent attacks in Paris are a grim reminder of the death and destruction even a small number of malevolent individuals can inflict upon a peaceful country and its citizens.
...
[My jurisdiction] will be fully supportive of any delays in resettling...refugees in order to ensure appropriate screening and security checks...
...
I note that refugee resettlement is one of the items to be discussed at our meeting next week. With that in mind, I am asking that you would have the appropriate officials provide [leaders] with a complete intelligence briefing on the terrorist threat that exists [in our country] today and on how the federal government plans to ensure that no ISIS-trained operatives are able to enter [the country], either as part of a refugee resettlement or in any other manner.

Suffice it to say that By-election Brad's sudden claim to be an advocate against bigotry is about as credible as Donald Trump's past bloviations about defending the public from the greed of the financial sector.
