Veteran Mountie, former girlfriend accused of sexually assaulting girl, 12, in 1982
EDMONTON -- A high-ranking 34-year veteran of the RCMP currently working in Fort McMurray is now facing sex charges for an incident involving a minor in Saskatchewan nearly 32 years ago.
Last December, an adult female told Mounties in Regina she was the victim of a sexual assault that occurred at a home during the summer of 1982.
She said she was 12 years old when she was assaulted by an adult female and an officer with the RCMP. Both the female and the officer were known to the girl, but police would not elaborate on their relationship.
"Allegations like this are disturbing when made against a member of the general public. For a serving police officer to be facing charges like these is extremely disturbing," said Saskatchewan RCMP Supt. Alfredo Bangloy during a press conference in Regina Tuesday morning.
Bangloy said the RCMP member appears to be involved in just one incident, while the female suspect was involved in multiple incidents during that summer.
"It takes great courage to speak out in these types of situations," he said.
Ronald Patrick Makar has been charged with one count of having sexual intercourse with a female without her consent and one count of having sexual intercourse with a female under the age of 14 -- charges Bangloy said are contrary to the 1982 criminal code.
Constance Haduik, who police say was in a relationship with Makar at the time of the offence, has also been charged with one count of indecent assault of a female. Hadiuk was arrested last week at her workplace in Kyle, Saskatchewan. Makar was arrested early Tuesday at the Wood Buffalo RCMP detachment in Fort McMurray. The pair are slated to make their first appearance in a Carlyle courtroom on June 4.
"As disappointing as the news concerning this officer is, I know that every day RCMP employees work hard to make a positive difference here in Alberta and across Canada," said Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan, commanding officer of the Alberta RCMP. "On days like today, we need to remind ourselves of that."
This isn't the first time Makar has found himself in hot water.
In 2004, two female RCMP constables filed lawsuits alleging they were harassed by a superior officer while working for the force in Milestone, Sask. In a statement of claim, the constables said they were subject to harassing comments and "verbal abuse."
