Hotel clerk shot in hand in Saskatoon

Suspect arrested after shooting in the Senator Hotel.

Reported by News Talk Radio staff

A hotel clerk has been shot after a man tried to rob the front desk at a Saskatoon hotel.

At around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday night, a man walked into Senator Hotel packing loaded gun.
He demanded money from the clerk working the front desk.

That ignited a struggle between the clerk and the 30-year-old man. The 33-year-old clerk was
shot in the hand.

“The staff member then began struggling with the suspect and during that struggle the gun
went off, striking the victim in the hand,” said Alyson Edwards, spokesperson for the
Saskatoon Police Service.

Customers and staff in the building intervened at this point and held the suspect until police
could get there. The suspect is in hospital with serious injuries, according to Edwards.

“There were injuries consistent with a physical beating,” she said.

The clerk’s injuries are not life-threatening. Both of them were taken to hospital.
The suspect was arrested and is under guard. Police are investigating the incident.

The underlining above is mine. I first heard about this on the radio earlier this morning.
No charges have been laid against anyone involved by the Saskatoon Police Service
yet, as they're still sorting things out to decide who's going to be charged with what.

While on a construction site, a finishing carpenter accidentally discharged his brad gun into the palm of my right hand. I think all brad guns should be banned.

I like the O.P. in that the Clerk has a non-life-threatening injury to his hand, but the
gunman is in the hospital with serious injuries. I can see this one re-opening the
debate (at least locally) regarding self defense in Canada....depending on how
the charges fall depending on what kind'a point the police decide to make.

I can see criminal charges going out to the staff & customers that piled on the gunman,
for not using 'the force of a reasonable man' in subduing this real criminal. One of those
'This'll learn the general public not to be vigilantes' sort'a PR nightmares that come up
from time to time in Canada.

With the gunman being in serious condition in the hospital, I'm doubting there will be any
awards being handed out.

I can't help but wonder if the gunman was reacting to a concealed finger-gun that the clerk may have had.

Self defense may be an option here

Oh, our local newspaper has picked up the story now...& they usually pick up
things long after they're still news...so this might be an indicator of which way
the wind is blowing regarding pending charges, as it's now downplayed
compared to earlier on the news services that still report things when they are
still news:

From: Clerk shot in hand during attempted robbery at Saskatoon hotel

A clerk is recovering after being shot through the hand during an attempted robbery
at a downtown Saskatoon hotel.

According to police, a 30-year-old man entered the Hotel Senator Thursday around
10:30 p.m. armed with a handgun. During the attempted robbery, a struggled ensued
between the clerk and suspect, and the suspect shot the 33-year-old male clerk
through the hand.

Customers and other hotel staff joined the fray and disarmed the suspect, holding
him until police could arrive.

The clerk’s injuries were non-life-threatening. The suspect was also injured during
the struggle. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

Maybe the hotel staff & customers might not be facing criminal charges this time.

The Senator is where the gays hang out to drink and meet. It would be even more embarassing for the suspect if he was beaten by gays.

I think you all mist a very important point here. The gunman was beaten up, therefore,
and its just an observation, we should outlaw fists, fists were used here to beat the guy
not sure if he was a gay guy or a non gay guy but the someone revealed its where the
gays hang out, Putting it that way is not meant to be offensive either.
Yup chop off all the hands of unstable people if a fist can be used as a weapon.
I think there is a partial answer and that is enforce the laws we already have before
making new laws that won't be enforced either,.

That, I guess, and will the beating be factored in as, "he's already been punished," when
it comes to his sentancing?

Is the story being downplayed as Gay's might react as a minority being persecuted
if charges are laid against the hotel staff & customers if charged are laid against
them? It'll be interesting to see how this one plays out.
