Ontario regulation 440/08 will come into effect January 1, 2011.

It will require every propane distributor in the province to obtain the services of a professional engineer to develop a risk and safety management plan.

This will in effect close down most small distributors who can't afford the cost of those services, which in turn, will put the price of your 20-pound tank of propane for your barbeque at around 50 to 60 dollars when refilling.

There will also be increases for those heating their homes with propane furnaces and for the many rural restaurants relying on propane for their kitchen equipment.

Remote tourist resorts that need propane for their daily operations and recreational campers with propane tanks on their trailers will be hit as well.

And what are the people who need propane doing about it?

About time they caught up with the rest of Canada.
Don't be alarmist. It is not a big deal. B.C. has had this requirement for years. I carry a binder with the plans for all our potentially dangerous goods at each jobsite. We even have to have an earthquake eveac plan even though we work outside.

When you see really dumb things - like the guy at Verner Co-op who was filling a gas bottle and enjoying his cigarette at the same time - you wonder which end needs the regulation?

I'm thinking that the cost to have a PEng develop a safety plan would be less than $5000.

If you can't afford that, in the propane business, you have no business being in that business.

I can only assume that in regulation happy Ontariariario this must be in addition to regulations already in place. I can't imagine that its been a free for all for all these years considering Dalton McSquinty has never met restrictive legislation he didn't love.

...........back to BBQing with wood.

Hard maple, apple, or cherry, makes the meat taste better.

Going to hurt those who heat and cook with propane on a regular basis.

In BC we have environmental farm plans on site we have the
regulations, and inspections and the safety record that has
saved lives. It is time for Ontario to catch up with what is in
fact happening everywhere else,
I think safety is a good thing especially in the workplace and
of course at the site where I purchase fuel.
I am proud to say that we have not had an accident on the
farm in over a decade. It only takes a few seconds to do it
right. My Grandpa once asked me when I was young
How come there is no time to do something right, yet there
is all kinds of time to do it over again. I kept that with me
all my life,, especially when I am in a hurry.

Well, the rules concerning propane in Ont. are already pretty stringent. And, no doubt the companies selling the stuff are careful.

When you go to buy it for the BBQ, the filling station is always set well apart from any existing structure. In homes that heat with propane, the tank is way to hell and gone out by the backhouse.

Personally, I've never seen anyone smoke while filling a container. But that's just Darwinism at its best.

The govt. is probably doing it so's the tree hugging, dope smuggling, prostitute killing, populace of BC won't feel like they're hanging out there all alone.

How does one "catch up" with people who think it's cool to live on an earthquake fault, and have one of the worst poverty and homeless records in all of Canada.

The reason B.C. which btw has some of the most stringent safety and environmental rules on the planet has so many homeless is because all the losers from Ontario and Quebec come here to collect welfare where the weather is tolerable. And some moron PM from back east made it legal for them to do so without asking our opinion.

Sorry, not all the losers come here. The rest reside in Ottawa and Toronto.

Every loser in BC takes every opportunity to slag Ont.

Lots of losers. lots of slagging.

Nothing like being divisive.
