There are many good places to live in Ontario. Toronto is probably out, given your house price range. One possibility would be London. It is centrally located, two hours from Toronto, one hour from US border.

I have lived in London for one year (my son is doing his medical school there, he will be done in June), London is a very nice city, not too big.

If you want something smaller, try something like Woodstock or Strathroy, both on major highways and not far from London. Or there are places like Guelph, Kitchener etc. (I assume you want to stay close to major highways). There you are going nearer Toronto, but away from US border.

I have been told that Sarnia is also a very good place to live (Windsor not so good, there is high unemployment). But then you are moving away from Toronto (three hours), though it is right on US border.

laniryan, consider Burlington.

Excellent schools, sport opportunities for both kids and grown-ups, close to Toronto and The United States, Lots of campgrounds, (some on Lake Ontario), good shopping and house prices well within your stated range.

Think about Peterborough. Lots of lakes, camping, great schools.

I just moved to the tillsonburg area, it's about 45 southeast of london. prices are super reasonable. Nice small town, abotu 15,000. We bought a place in town and can walk everywhere. there is nice country places all around. My job came with me but my husband had to find work. he got this first job he was interviewed for in the conservation areas. so far, so good here. We moved from BC where we were in the same boat, the family was getting bigger and there was no way we could aford a bigger place. What we paid for a whole triplex you couldn't buy a a tear down in BC. there are much nicer areas in ontario, north is great, and east is nice as well. Sounds like you need to take a road trip!

Nowhere near Northern Ontario-too bleak, too cold.

I would say Sturgeon Falls Ontario, a small community, with all the necessary commodities, in between two fairly big but not too big centers....North Bay and Sudbury and not that far away from Toronto or Ottawa and it's on the shore of lake Nipissing.

Why? Because Toronto is the centre of the universe, of course.

When I visited Vancouver, I was astounded as how expensive housing was over there. I used to think Toronto was expensive, but it is nothing compared to Vancouver. I was told by the taxi driver that a modest house would cost you half a million dollars. In a place like London, you could buy a mansion for that kind of money.

what we bought here for 200,000 would cost well over a mill in vancouver, it's crazy. I wish I knew what everyone did that can afford those places!

You got that right, but hey don't confuse Vancouver with British Columbia. I never noticed that Toronto was the "centre of the universe", but maybe that's because I was never there. I have passed through Ottawa though. If I HAD to live in Ontario I'd probably pick a spot like Kenora or Timmins or maybe even Thunder Bay.

Most of the well heeled ones probably import dope or own huge plantations in the Orient. The rest are probably old retired Canuck players. No doubt there are a few lawyers who defend drug importers. There's work that will support that lifestyle.............if it suits you.......................................:lo l:

When I crossed the Rockies in 72 I entered a whole new world and a whole new life. It was like I died and was reborn. Montreal was many lifetimes ago. Hell, Quesnel was many lifetimes ago. With all I have been through, my doctor said yesterday that I was in pretty good shape but that I don't have too many more lives left to live in this body.

I hope you stick around for awhile yet Cliff. Your vast knowledge brings some balance to the forum to offset a few of the idiots who babble continuously (Oooooops I hope I'm not including me )

Indeed. Lake Huron (Sarnia, Goderich, Grand Bend etc.) or Lake Superior (Thunder Bay) are much more pristine, much purer than Lake Ontario or Lake Erie (Windsor).

even georgian bay, beautiful area and water, but the biggest city round here is Sudbury, Which is GREEN i dont care what any of you people think. The birch trees are beginning to give way to the pines, spruce, oaks, maples etc
