Hi there...we are thinking of moving to (or near) Sarnia, ON.
Is it a good place to raise a family? For those who are familiar with the city, what do you like/dislike most about the place?
Thanks!

i haven't lived there, but i drive through sarnia everytime i travel to my aunts in michigan. Whenever i'm in the area, shopping and what not, the people there are very nice. I dunno about like what type of facilities they have there, but if you don't mind living on the border, then i'd say its a great place.

I dont trust it. It sounds too much like narnia. Watch out for women wearing white and carrying a wand.

I've lived in Sarnia for all but four years of my life. I can honestly and unbiasedly say that it is a great community. Low crime, a lot of work opportunities, The Sarnia Sports and Entertainment complex, Bayfest, a great community college and surrounded by Lake Huron and St. Clair River. There are mainly older people that have come from Toronto and larger cities to retire and take advantage of the inexpensive real estate market. There are great day care facilities and plenty of activities for everyone of all ages although not so much for the teenagers these days. Compared to what Sarnia was back in the seventies, it is much more industrial and user friendly. We have Port Huron, Michigan across the river and the dollar is much more competitive allowing us to shop over there at cosiderable savings. We have the new Super WalMart and the Lambton Mall has expanded a few times over the past decade. If you're looking for unique shops, downtown Sarnia is littered with them on Front Street and Christina Street - Home furnishings and Antiques/flea markets to high end clothing boutiques.

Sarnia still has that small town quality so beware... Although Sarnia is large enough to be some-what inconvenient it's still small enough that EVERYONE knows your business.
I used to day dream about the day I'd move away from Sarnia and live in Toronto or elsewhere but I'm glad I stayed as I'd not have a nicer place to raise my three children (ages 12, 3 and 1). I sell real estate but am not saying any of the above for business, I genuinely mean it. There are a lot more extras to Sarnia that you learn by living here. Petrolia, Corunna, Bright's Grove, Camlachie, etc. Are the surrounding areas that are approximately 20-45 minutes drive that are also equally nice to live in.

Good luck
