Thanks for those links to Yorkville. There are some pictures in the family album of my aunt who took off from her parents home in Vancouver - to have a whirl for a year in the big city of Toronto with her girlfriend, and to take some classes at the University of Toronto. The year was 1964 and for fun they took the train across Canada, stopping in places for a day or two...ending up in Toronto.... they found rooms in Yorkville in one of the old mansions which were horribly broken up into apartments with one bath to a floor and about four suites (ha) on each floor.
They lived above a Candle Shop and the scents from the candles kept them happy as they cared nothing about creature comforts...they used to sit outside on the weekends at coffee bars and drink what was new to her "Espresso" and other coffee concoctions - and there was one coffee place she used to talk about where they went quite often - the MouseHole (I hope I have that right).....They met students from all over the world there especially those who would come to Yorkville to see the little shops. There was one shopping area which was expensive at the time and it was walled off from the street and called (I forget the name except it ended in ... "Close"). They would look in the shops there but didn't purchase anything because of the high prices.
They loved riding the subway too - as they had never been on one before.
There were a lot of drugs around tho and she and her friend were happy when classes they took at the University were done for the year and they ended their trip by transporting a car home from Ontario to B.C. for some car manufacturer.
They had a great time, although their parents were worried all the time they were gone I think. The pictures are a riot - I think the 60s were a beginning of something, but still a bit innocent compared with what the world is like now.
I always thought she had run away from home ....until she came back with great entertaining stories and stupid me...I couldn't understand why someone would want to drink coffee in a MouseHole.
We used to hang around The Mouse Hole, The Mynah Bird and the Purple Onion in the days of the Paupers and Luke and the Apostles. But I digress .... What kind of information were you looking for exactly?
