Every year, the Canadian National Exhibition is known to bring something new, unique and sometimes stomach churning to the plate.
This year, the Ex has outdone itself yet again, with offerings wacky enough to challenge even the toughest appetites.
We’re talking a hotdog topped with bugs and fried pig ear sandwiches.
One of the biggest treats guaranteed to leave its mark is the “Philly Steaklair” — a bizarre cross between a steak and an eclair.
Yes, the 138th CNE will feature some mighty crazy new eats, but the classics, like the famous Tiny Toms Doughnuts, will still be there.
The CNE opens on Friday and runs until Sept. 5.

FIVE CRAZY FOODS
— THE BIG PICKLE DOG: This modern take to the classic corndog features a cored pickle with a hotdog centre, dipped in corndog batter and deep-fried. This hotdog was crunchy and juicy, and the sweet pickle leaves you wanting more. It can be found at Pickle Pete’s in the Midway.
— FRIED PIG EAR SANDWICH: Strange foods are the CNE’s bread and butter, and this sandwich features fired pig ears, coleslaw, maple bacon and cheddar cheese with spicy chipotle aioli. The sandwich was crunchy and the spicy chipotle complemented the creamy coleslaw, which distracts from the fact you’re eating pig ears, but that quickly changes at the first crunch of the cartilage. It can be found at Farm to Fryer in the food building across from BMO Field.
— PHILLY STEAKLAIR: This item combines two classics: The cheesesteak and the eclair. Inside an eclair bun sits steak, topped with bacon, cheese, whip cream and chocolate. A surprisingly delicious sort of dinner and desert in one bite, this sandwich will take your taste buds on a wild ride. It can be found at Philthy Philly’s inside the food building.
— ROSE APPLE DUMPLING: This baked dough-wrapped apple is served drizzled with a butterscotch sauce and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The delightful creation satisfies the sweet tooth and will leave you wanting seconds. It can be found at One Sweet Mama in the food building. I went for thirds.
— THE BUG DOG: The Bug Dog is a hotdog seasoned with coleslaw and ... crispy mustard crickets. Yes, crickets, a fine form of protein if you’re feeling weak after a couple of rides. It can be found at Bug Bistro in the food building.
FIVE ATTRACTIONS NOT TO MISS
— CNE INNOVATION GARAGE: People from across Ontario aged 18 to 35 will pitch their ideas or products to judges and the audience at the CNE Innovation Garage for a chance to win $25,000. The free event will showcase current innovations in consumer items and more. It’s held in Hall F in the Enercare Centre Aug. 19-21.
— WATERFRONT SHOWS: The CNE is back at the waterfront for the first time in more than 20 years. Several shows will be taking place by the lakeshore, including the Nautique WWA Wakeboard World Championship from Aug. 25-28.
— STAR TREK “50 ARTISTS. 50 YEARS.”: More than 50 artists from 10 countries will put on an exhibit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the series. All the pieces on display were commissioned for the exhibit.
— FOOD TRUCK FRENZY AND CRAFT BEER FEST: Food trucks will be taking over Princes’ Blvd. from Aug. 26-28. Festival-goers can enjoy craft beer as well from 10 different breweries.
— THE CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW: The event is back for its 67th running. The show will be taking place during the Labour Day weekend and will feature performances from the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and more.
