Sick of looking at a dry, brown lawn?
Paint it.
Operators of a Vancouver lawn-care company say GTA residents now make up the bulk of its customers — the result of the area being impacted by a series of heat spells and little rain.
The company, Lawnlift Canada, offers a 100% biodegradable, plant-derived lawn dye. It is sprayed on and permanent until the grass grows out and is mowed.
“We have brought this service and product in from California,” Lawnlift Canada’s Nicole Lundy said. “It’s been a huge industry in the (United) States for 20 years because of their droughts and hot temperatures.”
Painting a lawn, she says, is an alternative to doing away with problem grass altogether and replacing it with artificial turf.
“It allows the homeowner to keep their natural landscape, and it is much more cost-effective,” Lundy said. Customers are “just adding some curb appeal, short-term, until the grass basically repairs itself when the rain comes again.”
Lundy said 90% of Lawnlift Canada’s sales are made to GTA residents. Consumers can purchase paint from the company’s website (LawnLift - America's best selling Grass Paint only $12.95) and have it shipped.
“Last year, all of our sales were on the West Cast because we experienced a drought here in B.C. Now it has kind of flipped and gone east ... (and) we’re finally starting to see people catching on, going, ‘Oh, there’s another way of keeping our lawn green.’”
In 2015, Lawnlift Canada entered into an agreement with the City of Toronto to paint lawn areas for that year’s Luminato festival.
Lundy says it is safe for kids, pets and wildlife and doesn’t impact a lawn’s future growth.
