TORONTO - Toronto Trekkies — set faces to stun.

The latest instalment of the Star Trek television series will be filmed in Hogtown later this year, according to media reports.

Those reports say CBS studios booked studio space in Toronto last September to film the new series set to debut in early 2017.

“I’m going to assume it’s the studios they’re using and not inter-city filming, which would be cool to see,” said Cameron Stannard, the manager of Silver Snail Comics on Yonge St. “But at the very least, Toronto has the new Star Trek series filming here. I think that’s pretty cool. Star Trek (has) been going strong for decades. I don’t see it dwindling any time soon.”

But the production — the first Star Trek TV series to be filmed outside Los Angeles — is wrapped in a cloaking device at City Hall.

Shane Gerard, from the city’s economic development and culture department, wouldn’t confirm Star Trek was coming to town.

“It’s the production company’s announcement to make,” he said. “If they were to publicly disclose that they were filming in Toronto, that would be up to them.”

In February, Mayor John Tory travelled to Los Angeles where he met with a number of studio executives to sell the city’s film and television production industry. Asked Wednesday if that trip included a mind meld with Paramount Pictures execs to beam Star Trek into Toronto, Tory said he couldn’t take credit for the good news.

“I think what really deserves the credit is the product we have to sell here,” he said. “They know we have a really smart film and television infrastructure. They know we have a currency that is advantageous to them in terms of getting more for their dollar.”

This isn’t the first time Toronto has boldly gone where no man has gone before.

Toronto City Hall made a cameo in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the city hosted a massive Star Trek convention at SkyDome in 1994.

“One of the first Star Trek conventions ever was in 1976 at the Royal York Hotel,” said James Armstrong, event co-ordinator of Fan Expo Canada. “That’s before any of these next generations were to follow. I’ve always considered Toronto as a Star Trek city. Some cities are known as a Star Wars city. It’s not a battle or contest, but the population has always had a warm place in its heart collectively for Star Trek.”

Toronto isn’t the first Canadian city connected with a Star Trek production. Star Trek Beyond — the yet-to-be-released movie — was shot in Vancouver and Dubai in 2015.

Director Bryan Fuller, who will film the upcoming Star Trek series, also filmed his three-season critically acclaimed series Hannibal and American Gods in Toronto.
