Driver sought after woman falls off back of van
By Maryam Shah, Toronto Sun First posted: Sunday, July 12, 2015 10:35 AM EDT | Updated: Sunday, July 12, 2015 12:44 PM EDT
TORONTO - Police are searching for a van after a woman fell off the back and was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition Saturday night.
The 22-year-old woman along with another woman climbed onto the rear bumper of a van waiting at a red light on Ontario Place Blvd. shortly before midnight.
When the light turned green, the van made a left turn, going westbound on Lake Shore Blvd.
“At some point, the 22-year-old either falls off or attempts to get off the vehicle and when she does, she ends up falling to the roadway and suffering life-threatening injuries,” Toronto Police Const. Clint Stibbe said Sunday.
Now police are looking for the vehicle, described as a dark-coloured van similar to a Mercedes Benz Sprinter. According to police, it continued on its way on Lake Shore Blvd. after the woman fell.
It is unknown if the van driver was aware of the women clinging on at the back.
“We’re not going to assume either way,” Stibbe said. Investigators need additional information before they can draw conclusions, he added.
“It is somewhat baffling as to why they would have gotten on to the back of the van,” Stibbe said. “That’s why we can’t assume the event was planned or accidental.”
The second woman was not injured.
Police said they believe the van driver may have been “attending or working at an event called the Full Flex Express” at TD Echo Beach between 4 p.m. and midnight on Saturday.
Anyone with information can contact Toronto Police traffic services at 416-808-1900 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
