NEWMARKET - Lies, love, manipulation and fear of abandonment were the reasons why one of Shayne Lund’s girlfriends went along with his sick, twisted plans to rape children, according to a report submitted to the court Thursday.
The 60-page court-ordered psychiatric assessment explains how Kathryn Thompson, 21, of Orillia, crawled into Lund’s world of sexual deviation, and couldn’t get out again because she was terrified of losing him.
Thompson along with another woman, Avery Taylor, 21, of Orillia, and Lund, 24, of Midland, have all pleaded guilty to several crimes including planning to drug and rape children, sexually assaulting children, making child pornography and bestiality.
In the report, which states Thompson suffers from low self-esteem, Thompson repeatedly insists that she lied and told Lund she was “turned on” with his child fetish and his sordid plans to drug and rape children.
“I wouldn’t have let him go through with it,” Thompson claims. “It was all an act to keep him happy.”
Thompson reported that she entered into a sexual relationship with Lund when she was 15 and constantly craved his love. She paid for all costs on dates or he would “get mad,” she said. Lund manipulated her and “groomed” her, slowly revealing his dark fetish for children — especially toddlers, she said.
“You think I’m a monster don’t you?” Lund said, but then he cried and she felt sorry for him, Thompson said in the assessment. So she “pretended” to be sexually turned on by children and told Lund she couldn’t wait to have children with him so they could train them as sex toys.
Thompson also said she was in a constant, twisted competition with his other girlfriends. If she didn’t keep Lund happy, he would simply move on to another — primarily Taylor, who provided him access to children she babysat.
Police got involved when another girlfriend went to her school principal to report Lund was trying to get access to a small child in her family.
Thousands of texts between the trio were uncovered by investigators. Lund would tell Taylor and Thompson, “I need to kidnap a little one … I need my kinda fix,” and he would describe in horrific detail how he would abuse and torture them.
Thompson sent Lund photographs of a naked girl she had access to and together they planned to drug her so he could have his way with her.
She would write him stories about raping a crying, screaming child and send him photos of herself performing sexual acts with a dog, the report revealed.
Videos and photographs shared between them have been sealed by the judge.
The report said Thompson is “not likely” a pedophile, as the condition is mainly found in males, but notes there are no tests to diagnose women as a pedophile.
In his bid to keep the trio behind bars for as long as possible, Crown attorney Indy Kandola previously told court Thompson and Lund had a “Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka” scenario.
“That’s what were dealing with here … members of society would be sick to their stomachs … this country would be rocked” if the three were allowed to walk free, he told court.
Psychiatric assessments were requested for all three in preparation for seeking a dangerous offender or long-term offender designation for them, Kandola said.
But defence lawyer Angela McLeod insisted Thursday that Thompson is a good person and was manipulated “like a puppet on a string” and only submitted to Lund’s voracious child cravings for fear of losing him.
The hearing continues July 24.
