BROCKVILLE, Ont. -- A mother used a pair of scissors to kill her five-year-old daughter in a murder-suicide in this eastern Ontario city.
The coroner's officer has confirmed the five-year-old girl's death was a homicide, while her 36-year-old mother died from "self-inflicted lacerations."
"Forensic Identification officers recovered a pair of scissors which were used causing both deaths," Police Chief Scott Fraser said.
Both the mother and daughter had been dead for several hours before officers were called to the apartment Thursday afternoon after the Upper Canada District School Board alerted police to the girl's absence at school.
Police have not identified the woman and her daughter, but neighbour Ron Carr said they were Monica Willemsen and her daughter Katrina.
He added Katrina would have turned six on Saturday.
"She had a birthday party planned," an emotional Carr said.
Carr, 57, was in shock and disbelief about the apparent method of their death.
"She seemed quite happy," Carr said of Monica. "It just doesn't make sense."
The mother and daughter moved into the apartment four years ago, Carr said, adding he had been friends with Monica well before that.
"It's a terrible thing," he said.
Fraser said it was too early to tell what motivated the murder-suicide.
When police got the call to check on the family's well-being, they had no indication of any suicide risk, the chief added.
"I'm sure (the) investigation will lead us to the answers we're looking for," Fraser said. "Certainly this isn't something that anybody expected."

8O scissors? omg that is horrendous...just horrendous

yes because technically when you don't send your kid to school, and you don't call in to say why, and you don't answer your phone when the school calls, they are supposed to dispatch the police to check on you

IF that happened every time parents didn't call, didn't answer, forgot to say where they were before noon, that's all the police would do.

Luckily here, they did, which would indicate to me, there was a history there. There is more to this story for sure.

ok, glad sneaking suspicions are wrong, but why withhold names after family has been notified?

Carr could be a prime suspect. anything ruling him out? alibi? why wouldn't he have been the one to notify police?

he wouldn't have notified the police because he was just a neighbour, how would he know.

they would with hold names because
  • it is the Canadian way
  • there may well be other family to contact

he was a jerk off to give out the names but he may well have been in shock, the kid was just a baby and he has known the family a long time

he would be ruled out by the crime scene itself I would imagine...stab wounds that are self inflicted would be very different than those produced by someone over another and stabbing down...depth of wound etc would also differ as would the blood spray patterns

ew gross... but yeah

Where's the father?

in someone else's bed whom he thinks he loves better

or maybe unaware that he even has a daughter

there were big issues here....the cops aren't called in by the school until they have gone down every other avenue OR they know there are massive problems...it's the end of October, this kid is 5 just turning 6 and already the school knew, bring in the authorities there is a problem beyond us

IF this kid was being abused and it went unreported, watch for a big investigation into procedure

IF which is likely authorities were already involved my guess would be mum was afraid she was going to lose her daughter

maybe

but it's not hard to think of how wounds could appear self-inflicted.

she confronts him over his abuse of her daughter

goes to stab him with the scissors

he easily overpowers her and moves behind her

stabbing her with the scissors still in her hand

then kills kid near mom, after removing her, sleeping, from her room

of course his prints could be anywhere in the apartment because they were friends, right?

all I'm sayin' is it's not so cut and dried as one might think and I hope investigators are exercising due diligence.

I agree it's not so cut and dried, but the fact that the school called in the police tells me a lot

BROCKVILLE -- The family of a mother and daughter involved in a murder-suicide in Brockville want them to be remembered as a "devoted mother" and "sweet little girl."
In their first public statement since the tragedy was discovered Thursday, the family of Monica Willemsen and her daughter Katrina also thanked the community for its support and asked for "space and time ... to process the aftermath of this tremendous loss."
Brockville police discovered the bodies of Monica Willemsen, 36 and her five-year-old daughter in their apartment, after staff at Katrina's school called to report her absence.
A coroner's examination has since confirmed the girl "died as a result of a homicide," police added, while her mother "died as a result of self-inflicted lacerations."
"This is a very challenging time for both families and we appreciate all the support, prayers and love," reads the statement by Michelle Adams-Francis, the aunt of Jesse Jenkinson, Katrina's father.
"Monica was a loving and devoted mother. She spent the last five years making Katrina the number one priority in her life, doing her best to make sure Katrina had a happy childhood," her statement continued.
"Katrina was a beautiful, vibrant energetic, sweet little girl and was loved by everyone who met her. Their loss has left a huge hole in our lives and we are all struggling to come terms with what has happened."
City police continue to investigate the tragedy.

Depression, obsession drove Ont. woman to murder-suicide, family says

BROCKVILLE -- Michelle Adams-Francis says she and other family members "were blindsided" by the murder-suicide that claimed a mother and her young daughter in Brockville last week.
Police discovered the bodies of Monica Willemsen, 36, and her five-year-old daughter on Thursday in their Kyle Court apartment, after staff at Katrina's school called to report her absence. A coroner's examination has since confirmed the girl "died as a result of a homicide," while her mother "died as a result of self-inflicted lacerations."
Adams-Francis, the aunt of Jesse Jenkinson, Katrina's father, said both sides of the family are devastated not only by the deaths but the way Monica's apparent depression rapidly escalated to the point that the tragedy could happen.
"Something went really wrong. This is not the girl that we knew at all," added Linda Trudeau, Katrina's great-grandmother.
Adams-Francis told QMI Agency police have told family members Willemsen had spent great amounts of time on the Internet, apparently obsessed with websites predicting the imminent end of the world.
She had left behind many pages of rambling writings on the topic, leading family members to conclude she had become obsessed with this idea, an obsession they believe was fuelled by depression.
The women said there was nothing in Willemsen's outward behaviour to suggest she was suffering from such a damaged view of reality. All everyone knew was the doting mother.
"In our minds, she was not capable of doing this. Even now, it sounds surreal," said Adams-Francis.
