SARNIA, Ont. -- A man diagnosed with sexual behaviour disorders has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for a series of sexual assaults, at least one of which involved medical equipment.

John William Kennedy, 47, was convicted in Sept. 2012 of 10 offences.

Two of Kennedy's victims were left with dire, lasting and profound affects that required extensive counselling, Justice John Desotti said during sentencing, when he also declared Kennedy a dangerous offender.

Kennedy administered a stupefying drug to assault one woman and unlawfully confined her to his home for three days in 2010, sexually assaulted her with a weapon -- a catheter -- and endangered her life during the assault.

A catheter is a tube used to collect urine directly from a person's bladder.

The woman came to Kennedy's home after they had been chatting online.

Kennedy poured her two rum cooler drinks and also gave her pills that she took voluntarily believing them to be the stimulant ecstasy.

Afterward, she said she felt "very mush-like" and did not remember what happened.

Drug testing found prescription drugs in her system that matched some of the medication prescribed to Kennedy, which included painkillers, anti-anxiety medication and anti-depressants.

The woman's next memory was lying in bed with Kennedy and seeing a tube and a bag with yellowish fluid near the bed.

The woman's DNA was found on one of numerous catheters found in Kennedy's home during a police search. Police also found other medical equipment including a device used for ******l examinations.

Kennedy was also convicted of sexual assault and sexual interference with a girl in her early teens whose mother had moved the family into Kennedy's home in 2008 following their online relationship.

The young girl was assaulted during the four days the family spent in Kennedy's home before her mother decided they were not staying after Kennedy urinated in her mouth. The woman testified Kennedy had told her he wanted to use a catheter on her.

The mother had met Kennedy through a dominant/submissive lifestyle website.

Kennedy also assaulted and sexually assaulted a woman who went to his home for dinner in 2010.

Kennedy's prior criminal record includes multiple assaults and fraud offences but no sexual assaults.

A psychiatric assessment done following Kennedy's conviction stated he had a personality disorder, an alcohol-abuse disorder and one or more sexual behaviour disorders.

The assessment stated Kennedy was at a moderately high risk of further violent and sexual offences.

There is some doubt whether there is a reasonable possibility of the eventual control of the risk, stated the report.

The 13-year penitentiary sentence includes the equivalent of six years and 78 days he has already spent in custody.

Kennedy will be on the sexual offender registry for life and must give police a DNA sample.
