50,000 bees removed from Kitchener, Ont., home

Removing bees doesn't usually cause this much of a buzz. But beekeeper David Schuit knew he had his work cut out for him when he discovered 50,000 of the little honey-makers had taken over a two storey home in Kitchener, Ont.
Schuit, the owner of Saugeen Country Honey in Elmwood, Ont., was hired to remove the large beehive Tuesday.
He said the homeowners had recently approached him at his booth at the St. Jacobs' Farmers' Market.
"We've got bees in our house, we need you to take them out," he said they told him.
Schuit said when he went to the house he could hear them through the walls, likely having entered the home through a crevice around a window or the roof.
"They were starting to produce honey," Schuit said, which can be a bigger problem than the bees themselves. He said any honey already produced can melt on a hot day, getting into wiring and outlets.
After smoking them out of the walls, Schuit said he will keep them as part of his own apiary, far from residential trouble.
