What is especially disturbing is how restaurant workers are notorious for not washing their hands after using the rest rooms.

Ugh!!

Tsk tsk shame on the 'Merkins again as Reuters scores another tatty article in their never ending Old Auntie Maud cautionary tales about the bad Yanks.

Strangely enough they don't even touch the disgusting state of pubs and eateries in Jolly Olde where vomit resides aplenty on the sidewalks waiting for the next rain to clear it out....

Would you compare China - India - Mexico - Greece ? Of course not.... let's just natter away about the lack of handwashing in the New World....

LOLOLOL.... fascinating this bitchfest never ends with a long list of insufferable nastiness.

Seems to me that the article may be an indicator of habits of all of us not in third world countries. I didn't really see it as a poke at Americans. I'd assume that the same sort of stats would be occurring in Canada as well. It's a bit of a reminder for us all, I suspect. Especially those who work in the food industry. I would never eat anything if I thought about how many hands touched it. Ick ick ick! The thought sends my OCD into overdrive.

Perhaps most significantly, the research was done by Americans ...

Just another example of an american, on a Canadian forum, trying to find anti-american bias with every comma and period.

Unfortunately, there has been quite a lot of that on this forum. Point out anything possibly negative that takes place in the States and it is automatically ''anti-American''. Do the same about Bush and it's ''you hate Bush'' or you are a ''Bush hater''.

Total nonsense. That's all it is.

God help us if we touch something that had been in unwashed contact with genitals. How bloody awful! Amazing that the human race isn't in decline after all that genital contact.

Hospitals everywhere. Even local doctor's clinics you'll find physicians fail to wash their hands between patients. People all over the place will walk straight out of a filthy washroom and sit down to eat without even a thought about washing their mitts.

Granted everyone has an immune system to handle the common bugs that come along but it's a problem and it probably starts when kids are young, failing to be taught the importance of washing hands.

But where it's a disgrace is in hospitals where there are some seriously contagious patients. CBC has done an investigation into this very topic and found startling conditions in a number of hospitals across Canada. So you can be sure that there is ten times more in the US.

And the worst part of it is, that people just sit there watching.

If your family doctor came into the room and failed to go directly to the sink or to a sanitation station, would you stop them and remind them to wash up first before they examine you? Actually most people would feel embarrassed to speak up. Speak up!

Having been through the medical mill lately - I have been studiously researching
habits of staff regarding their patient contact.

I have never been touched once by a person not wearing protective gloves which were put on in my presence and removed at end of session.

So washing hands is a bit moot eh? A good practice but only secondary to reliable protection....the glove.

Regarding the subject of restaurants - that is a choice we all make. If you are in doubt about their cleanliness policy which is a matter of liability for health department inspection and examination.... check with the local health department.

We have monthly reporting in the paper now of restaurants not passing their health requirements and sanitation check including the food storage temperatures, container usage and care of washroom facilities for staff and customers. It's interesting how the places have been monitored now the public can read about it...the checks go on all the time but if the public aren't made aware of the problems which need correction...what is the point?

Some of the large towns and cities like L.A. put report card letters in their front window for the public to see, ie: A, B, etc. It's been a reality check for some places.
