An excellent question. I have no idea...weird stuff. The wife hadn't even identified her husband and they were cutting into his face for whatever reasons...

Here is a possible answer. When they do an autopsy, they also have a look at the brain. Generally what they do is remove the cap from the skull. This involves making a cut in the skin around the top of the head. This is usually done in the hairline but I know that any cut on the head bleeds like crazy. They could have started the cut and when the blood poured out they could have seen their error. There could have been blood all over his face. I could be wrong....

No, the way the article and the pics tell it, they cut into his chin area, just under his mouth. But it MAY be a translation issue.

Is an autopsy even warranted in a car accident? Reuters rarely gives in-depth coverage on these strange stories, but a highway accident where a man is declared dead, I would think under normal conditions doesn't warrant an autopsy. As I said also, I think autopsies normally require next of kin permission, maybe not in Venezuela?

Yes, autopsies are warranted in car accidents for several reasons. One is to get blood to test for alcohol and drugs. Or to tell if the accident was caused by a natural event such as a heart attack. Or to be able to graphically describe all the injuries in a court of law in order to squeeze more money out of the person being sued for causing the accident. And if the coroner orders an autopsy, this overrides any decision of the family.

Of course, even in Canada, sometimes autopsies are done, as in this case, just to determine whether in fact the person is dead, or as in this case, faking it.

I'm not sure about that. I believe that in some cases a family can say that they do not want an autopsy performed due to their religious beliefs, can't they?

No. They can discuss their concerns with the coroner and maybe the coroner will elect to forgo an autopsy if it is not absolutely necessary, but if the coroner orders it, then this decision overrides the family's wishes.

That's assuming there was something to warrant an autopsy, which is kinda what I was getting at, as Reuters doesn't give good details

I've seen two bodies after autopsy and neither had any cut in the chin area but I'm no expert...

I've seen bodies where the faces have been cut up, but those were from the windshields, not anything done in autopsy.

The bodies I've seen that had to go through autopsy didn't have any facial cutting.

In those cases where the body is extremely decomposed they remove the jaw in order to identify the stiff--compare it to dental records etc--I think i saw that on a CSI episode so it must be true. However, in this case it appeared to be a relatively well preserved body without any decomposition---ie he was still alive. Unless he had undergone the extremely rare condition of PRE- mortem decomposition. Alternatively its possible this was an example of a resurrection. The clue would be if his first name happened to be Jesus ( pronounced Hesus) and his mother's name is Maria. Anyway its a miracle and a sure sign that God is on Chavez's side.
