Some people feel that the have to go into work, no matter how sick they feel. That is totally irresponsible, as you have to take other people's health into consideration as well. Last December I (along with their entire family) got the Norwalk virus while over at a friend's house playing boardgames. It started out that night(a Saturday) with their one son getting sick around 3am. That was that, so I left to go home.
I had to work 3pm-11pm on Monday(or was it Tuesday?), so I was going to go to bed around 6am that morning. However, my stomach started rumbling(and not in the "I'm hungry!" sort of way) and I knew something was up. Thankfully I was able to call my Supervisor and let her know that I was not going to be coming into work that day. It was a good thing that I did, as about an hour later I was so sick that I wished that I would die. It was freaking horrible!
The actual symptoms only lasted that day, but I had to call in sick the next day as I was so dehydrated that my head was pounding like crazy.
The whole point behind this post is this...what would have happened if I had decided to go into work even though I knew I was sick? I shudder to think how many other guards, Loss Prevention Supervisors, and/or factory employees would have contacted it. The Norwalk Virus is super contagious(as I unfortunately found out!) and it would have had huge ramifications for security there.
If you have something contagious like the flu or Norwalk, stay home. The only one I can see not staying home is if you have a small cold. Those are so prevalent during Winter that people would be gone from work all the time(of course there are a couple of guards who take time off sick all the time anyhow)if they did that.

Companies who intimidate about sick time are selfish and bad employers
If one person came in with a contageous illness out of fear and backlash by the company, they would lose a great deal more personnel if a significant number became ill.
Stupid planning - if companies don't have the foresight to build that into their budget - they are either short-sighted or dictators. Everyone has sick time happen over the years - and people who are sick don't perform very well so they might as well stay home and keep their illness to themselves.
