Dallas Stars centre Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench after an apparent cardiac event during Monday night's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Play was stopped at 13:37 of the first period as emergency personnel attended to the fallen Stars forward and quickly carried him away. He was taken to the hospital and is conscious, the team announced.
"We treated (Peverley) for a cardiac event successfully," Dr. Gil Salazar told reporters. Treatment included the use of a defibrillator.
Salazar added that Peverley was aware of where he was when he became conscious and wanted to return to the game.
Peverley recently returned to the Stars lineup after ongoing heart issues forced him to leave a game last week.
The Blue Jackets were leading the Stars 1-0 on a power-play goal by Nathan Horton before the game was postponed. A decision about the remainder of the game will be made by the NHL at a later date.
Peverley missed the entire pre-season and the first game of the season with an irregular heartbeat. He also missed last Tuesday's game in Columbus after he felt ill following a game against the Buffalo Sabres the night before.
Peverley returned to the lineup Thursday, playing on the Stars' top line with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn.
