I'm thinking that the name should have an obvious connection to the city/province.

Maybe the Winnipeg Mosquito Warriors or the Winnipeg Flood.

WIN-a-Peg comes to mind, but that somehow reminded me of Whack-A-Mole.

I think that I'll go with Whack-A-Mole

The Winnipeg Reds (after the river), but that would undoubtedly be construed as racist.

Winnipeg Sandbaggers?

Winnipeg Dikes? lol- we'll save that for the women's league...

Well, last night at the draft they revealed the name is (once again) the Jets. It seems a little wierd to me because the Jets moved to Phoenix. Shane Doan was a Jet, and has never signed with a different organization but now the Jets will be his opposition? I'll admit to having some doubts about the NHL's return to Winnipeg and this naming thing, on top of the debacle with the replacing of the management team and coaching staff, has me wondering what kind of circus just rolled into Winter-peg...

The new name should be the combination of the old name, Jets and one of the proposed names, The Moose.

Here come the Winnipeg Joose!

I was looking forward to a different name as well, but then, it is the local population who want
to continue with the 'jets' so be it, it is their team, and I guess those with vintage jerseys
will be happy, they can drag them out and wear them.

I'm surprised that the Coyotes(or NHL) allowed them to use the name. I would think that they would still own the rights to the name, as they still own the records and stats from the previous Jets franchise.

I guess they don't. Perhaps when they purchased the winnipeg team long ago, and chose to drop that
name, that was it, what is the point of them having rights to it.

Not sure if winnipeg had the right to bring the 'thrasher' name with the team, obviously they didn't
want it anyway, and they won't have any rights to it. Maybe it stays with the previous owner, and
maybe jets did same.

Paul Kariya announced his retirement today, he is from north vancouver, didn't play
all of last season with post concussion syndrom. Had a good career, to bad he didn't
play on the canucks at some point.

It all depends on what Phoenix owns, do they own the rights to the name, or not? Probably not. Typically, if it's a product, the buyer wants the name above all else, due to recognition. If you're moving a sport team, and changing the name, the old name would have little value.

I'm sure that this issue was very, very carefully researched by the lawyers. It might be that the new owners wanted that name from the beginning, but didn't want to say anything until they had legal ownership cleared up.

That said, isn't 'Jets' a reasonable name for Winnipeg, because, if memory serves, there is/are companies in Winnipeg who specialize in jet maintenance? Bristol Aerospace comes to mind, along with the F18 scandal, but then again, my memory is cloudy. Moosehead, you know.

Furthermore, now that Winnipeg's AHL team has moved to St John's, NL, there's a Seadogs player who is going to play with them. Hope he makes it to the big leagues, there were 5 Seadogs drafted to the NHL last week.
