TV medium Derek Acorah took part in the world's biggest paranormal experiment early this morning and caused a sensation amongst Sun readers.

Liverpudlian Acorah, famous for his appearances as the resident medium on British ghosthunting TV series Most Haunted between 2002 and 2005 and then again in 2010, was invited to conduct a series of psychic readings which were shown live and unedited on The Sun's website.

His live webchat was joined by more than 10,000 Sun readers at midnight this morning, with thousands flocking to the site after word spread via Twitter and Facebook. The event is thought to have set a world record for the largest number of people to take part in a paranormal experiment of this kind.

And those listening were left impressed after the former footballer, who played for Liverpool under Bill Shankly, gave information about callers which was amazingly accurate.

One woman — who was picked at random by The Sun's staff from hundreds of callers — was accurately told by Acorah that her grandmother had passed away.

Hundreds of Sun readers left comments on the newspaper's website saying they were wowed by Derek's paranormal skills.

Derek's original appearance on Most Haunted, the world's most popular ghosthunting TV series which sees presenter Yvette Fielding, her husband Carl Beattie (the show's director) and the rest of the team (consisting mainly of the Most Haunted crew along with ghost experts) travel to haunted locations around the UK in which they get up to hair-raising adventures in the dead of night, lasted from 2002, when the show started, until 2005 when he was as good as sacked after several cases of controversy. On many shows Acorah often seemed to be possessed by a spirit (which was great entertainment for those watching believing that, for example, a woman-hating 18th Century highwayman was speaking through him causing him to shout vile swear words at Yvette Fielding!) , but the show's resident psychologist Ciaran O'Keeffe was always suspicious, eventually leading him to set up traps to catch Acorah out. On one episode of Most Haunted at a haunted jail, Acorah claimed to be possessed by the spirit of a man - a South African jailer - called Kreed Kafer. In a later interview, Ciaran O' Keeffe claimed that the character was completely fictional. O' Keeffe claims that he fabricated the "Kreed Kafer" character (an anagram of "Derek faker"), and misfed the information to Acorah who subsequently presented it as fact.

In November 2009 Acorah featured in two programmes where he attempted to make contact with the spirit of Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson: The Live Seance and Michael Jackson: The Search For His Spirit. The show was named the worst TV programme of 2009 in a poll of more than 9,000 Yahoo! users.

'Communicating' ... Derek Acorah in The Sun studios

By STAFF REPORTER

TELLY medium Derek Acorah took part in Britain's biggest paranormal experiment early today — and caused a sensation among Sun readers.

Acorah, who says he can communicate with the dead through a spirit guide, conducted a series of psychic readings which were shown live and unedited on our website.

We invited Derek to take part so that readers could decide for themselves whether or not they believe he can contact the dead.

The star gave out information about many callers which proved to be amazingly accurate, although he was not successful on every attempt.

His live webchat was joined by more than 10,000 Sun readers at midnight, with thousands flocking to the site after word spread via Twitter and Facebook.

Chat ... Acorah

The event is thought to have set a world record for the largest number of people to take part in a paranormal experiment of this kind.

One woman — who was picked at random by The Sun's staff from hundreds of callers — was accurately told by Acorah that her grandmother had passed away.

Derek was able to describe her family circumstances in great detail, even down to mentioning a relative's taste for tattoos.

But not every caller was convinced, and overall 45 per cent remained sceptical.

However 34 per cent told us in a poll that they believe they DID witness Acorah communicate with the dead, with 21 per cent unable to decide.

Hundreds of Sun readers left comments on our website saying they were wowed by Derek's paranormal skills.

"He was accurate in everything he told me.... in fact I'm still in shock tbh!!! There may be some sceptics out there but until he links in with you, then you have no idea.

"I have telephoned my family members about my reading and they cannot believe the information he was able to give.... I am in awe of you Derek - you are truly gifted and I thank you for my wonderful reading...."

Katz 55 said: "This has been so enjoyable, thank you Derek ! you have answered quite a few questions about the "after life" for me tonight....."

But not all the readers were convinced of Derek's skills, Pep4UK said: "To me on some of the calls it could have been for anyone.

"We all sat up waiting and hoping for a reading or at least some proof but to me he was dragging calls on so he didnt really get that many.

"This is more than once I've seen Derek and im afraid to me he just isn't on the same level as some, others get things bang on.

"To me he guesses a lot and his comments could apply to anyone at all."

Someone's Grandmother passed away? Holy **** what are the odds of someone in their twenties having their grandmother pass away recently? Man those psychics really can suck people in. I expect the Million Dollar Challenge is still unclaimed.
