Supreme Court rules for anti-gay church over military funeral protests - CNN.com

I have a solution.... Baptism - a full ten minute dunk (both time and head)

The Westboro Church consists mainly of an extended family.....very few supporters. They also depend on publicity, and usually telegraph their intention to protest.

What is needed is much LARGER counter-protests, to surround them and drown them out.

As opposed to just drown them....as enticing a prospect as that may be.

You know, I was brought up in a strict Baptist home be loving parents....that community would be horrified at the actions of the Westboro Church....I am a member of no church, but I am embarrassed that these people call themselves Baptists....or Christians, for that matter.

Westboro church is a perfect example of how a relgion can be twisted into something it's not.

Oh, you are one o'them "lapsed" Baptists..........................good on ya:lol:

Friend in high school was a Baptist...(his daddy the head honcho, locally)..........................not allowed to play the piano lest it was hymns....................In gr.13, he got up in the last assembly of the year, played "Bumble Boogie", yelled "that's it"!!!.........and walked off the stage...................got a standing O........time bomb..........right??..........lol.

Sorry, off the OP.................why do I do this??;-)..........So they have a "right" to protest. The families of the soldiers have a "right" to bring some more relatives and beat the sh it out of them. My sons would do it for me. I thought the US was "violent'. Just shows to go ya.

eh.

If they ever protested at a funeral for one of my loved ones I would probably end up getting charged with assault. This is not Freedom of Speech, it is hate speech, and should be considered a hate crime.

They are scum, and now that they have won their appeal look for them to be even more obnoxious. One of these days they are going to attend the wrong funeral and then they will regret their actions.

While I feel they are horribly ignorant twits, I do have to point out that labelling what they say as hate speech means there is no freedom of speech.

Canadians who battle against the concept of human rights commissions can hardly disallow ignorant morons the right to speak freely.

When talking about rights and freedoms, I usually like to point out that freedom of thought, conscience, belief and opinion are useless freedoms. The government has no power over your mind. You can go on thinking and believing whatever you want without any possibility of state intervention. When you choose to express what you think, you're covered under free expression.

Hate crime, however, is the state attempting to do what should be impossible. Hate crime is thought crime.

Then I should be allowed to express my disgust at them protesting a loved one's funeral by punching them in the mouth.:)

No, that's a crime, assault and battery, though I think that with a good lawyer and a sensible jury you'd do no time for it. I certainly wouldn't vote for conviction if I were on that jury, I'd excuse the act on grounds of intolerable provocation. Actually though, the court has correctly upheld the U.S. constitution, the members of the Westboro Baptist Church have the same rights as anybody else to protest against things that offend them, doesn't matter that they're ignorant idiots. If they were interfering with the conduct of the funeral service, or obstructing the free movement of people attending it, that's a different thing, but if they want to carry stupid signs and march around the periphery chanting slogans, that is their right. Free speech and free assembly mean nothing if they don't extend to people you vehemently disagree with.

The problem is that in the USA promoting hatred of one group by another is not considered a crime. As a result racists and other extremists are allowed to publicly spew out any vile filth they wish.

Freedom of speech is a principle. I've found that most people tend to say they believe in freedom of speech until someone says something they don't like. I've certainly been guilty of the knee-jerk reaction of wanting someone to "just shut up" when they are saying what I deem to be offensive rheotoric. I would say that, despite the fact that I personally find the Westboro Church aborhent in their speech and behaviour, they do have the "right" to say what they want. Denying someone, anyone really, the right the voice their thoughts and opinions, may just be too slippery of a slope.

Now, "where" they can say it is another matter. Certainly we can place limits on certain public areas and forums where free speech is permitted. I think outside of a funeral/chapel would be a no-brainer as far as off-limits goes. Other places, like Parliament Hill or outside a court, should never have a ban.

The real reason the Westboro Church gets so much press is not the message. It's not what they are saying, but where they are saying it. They have to sensationalize in order to get their message out, therefore the message itself is without merit. Remove the sensationalism aspect and they fade into obscurity, where quite frankly they belong.

It's a public place. The solution in this particular instance is to make the cemetery a private place and the problem would go away on it's own. All you have to do is adopt a bylaw requiring people to rent it for a funeral. You only have to charge a penny.

Now, that the Supreme Court Of The United States made its decision, all the cockroaches - sons and daughters of those who spat on returning Viet Nam veterans a generation ago - can come out of the closet and spit on the veterans returning from Iraq and Afganistan.

None of them EVER meant when they said that they stood behind the troops. Except meaning that they stand behind them, screwing them. All in the politically correct way, of course!
