Pope Benedict is widely admired and respected by the Catholic faithful. When first elected he was tagged with handles like the Panzer Kardinal and the 'German Shepherd'.. but his Pontificate has been more pastoral than combative. His encyclicals have stressed the inner succor of faith.. Deus Caritas est (God is Love), Spe Salvi (Faith is Hope), Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth).
He has intiated counter-reforms to rein in the corrupt interpretations of the Second Vatican Council (under the guise of the 'Spirit of Vatican 2'), which has led to so much turbulence in the Church and its teaching institutions over the last 40 years.
He has re-instituted the Old Latin Mass (1962 Missal) as an extraordinary and widely available form. Much of the culture of dissent on fundamental moral doctrines within the Church has coalesced around the Novus Ordo, the vernacular version of the Mass instituted by Paul VI, with the priest facing the nave and much of mystical and reverent quality of the liturgy lost.. which has led to its becoming increasingly laden with Protestant congregational and anticlerical sentiments & symbolism.
He has taken a strong stand to excise ALL homosexuality, pedophile and adult, from the priesthood, which has become a cancerous rot on the body of the Church.
He's a great Pope, completely in synch with his community and vocation. His ministry, with its emphasis on fundamental structures of faith is collaborative and complimentary to JPII's preaching emphasis.
Only those who have abandoned faith and fallen into the grips of the moral relativism, radical individualism and atheism that pervades our age and will undo our civilization think otherwise.
