Discovery’ of Afghan riches a pro-war PR scam?

The ‘discovery’ of Afghanistan’s minerals will sound pretty silly to old timers,” a "retired former senior US official" tells Politico's Laura Rosen. “When I was living in Kabul in the early 1970’s the [US government], the Russians, the World Bank, the UN and others were all highly focused on the wide range of Afghan mineral deposits. Cheap ways of moving the ore to ocean ports has always been the limiting factor.”
So why is this news now? To many, the story's timing suggests a Pentagon public relations campaign designed to extend public support for the war with the hope that, in time, Afghanistan may be able to raise itself out of abject poverty.
Webmaster's Commentary:
This smells like a campaign to try to give the US public a reason to believe that prolonging this war has any kind of an upside for the US, which it does not.
At the end of the day, the money will be going to private corporations with Afghans seeing precious little of it, while more of our troops come home maimed for life, or in body bags, for perhaps years to come.

I don't expect news of a huge mountainous region having large deposits of minerals should come as any great surprise. What will be interesting is whether or not the development of them will have any impact on bringing Afghanistan into the modern world and bring anything positive to the average Afghan or whether it will simply become one more version of Bolivia.
