'North Korean torpedo' sank South's navy ship - report

Lettering on the torpedo that "proves" its North Korean origin A North Korean submarine's torpedo sank a South Korean navy ship on 26 March causing the loss of 46 sailors, an international report has found.
Investigators said they had discovered part of the torpedo on the sea floor and it carried lettering that matched a North Korean design.
Pyongyang rejected the claim as a "fabrication", South Korea's Yonhap agency reported.
It said the North threatened war if sanctions were imposed by the South.
But South Korean President Lee Myung-bak pledged to take "stern action" against the North.

"The attack demonstrates a total indifference to human life and a blatant disregard of international obligations" William Hague, UK Foreign Secretary
The White House described the sinking of the ship as an "act of aggression" by North Korea that challenged peace.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the report was "deeply troubling".
The Cheonan went down near the disputed inter-Korean maritime border, raising tension between the two nations, which technically remain at war.
The shattered wreck of the 1,200-tonne gunboat was later winched to the surface, in two pieces, for examination.
'Perfect match' The investigation was led by experts from the US, Australia, Britain and Sweden.
It said: "The evidence points overwhelmingly to the conclusion that the torpedo was fired by a North Korean submarine.
The Cheonan sinking has increased tensions between the two Koreas "There is no other plausible explanation."
The report said the torpedo parts found "perfectly match" a torpedo type that the North manufactures.
Lettering found on one section matched that on a North Korean torpedo found by the South seven years ago.
There had earlier been a number of explanations suggested for the sinking, including an accidental collision with an unexploded sea mine left over from the Korean War.
Mr Lee's presidential office said he had told Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd: "We will be taking firm, responsive measures against the North, and through international cooperation, we have to make the North admit its wrongdoing and come back as a responsible member of the international community."
However, the BBC's John Sudworth in Seoul says agreeing an international response will be difficult as the diplomatic options will be limited.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said on Thursday the sinking of the vessel was "unfortunate" but he would not comment on the international report.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said US President Barack Obama had expressed his "deep sympathy" to Mr Lee and the Korean people.
"The United States strongly condemns the act of aggression that led to their deaths," Mr Gibbs said.
The British embassy in Seoul quoted Foreign Secretary William Hague as saying: "[North Korea's] actions will deepen the international community's mistrust. The attack demonstrates a total indifference to human life and a blatant disregard of international obligations."

The North Korean leaders are a band of very sick puppies. A small elite sell contraband goods and make fraudulent insurance claims to live in luxury while the population suffers greatly. One wonders how long the regime can stagger on.

So if a nuclear power (be it the US, Britain, Russia, India, China or anyone else) decided that they wanted Canada one day, would you say the same thing? No one should sell themselves into slavery, especially to someone as bastsh!t insane as Kim Jong Il, "just to keep the peace".

Those pricks are flooding our, North American, market with too many cheap LCD TV, and now three friggin D. They need a war to let the rest of the world, Sony and Panasonic etc, to catch up. They are the bloody Wal-Mart of the electronics industry. Even they make stuff in China, Samsung that is. I wonder how much the US owes Korea. LOL

I can't see the big deal here. I mean one machine from one side sunk a machine from the other side but in doing so, it sunk itself, too. Sounds pretty even to me, cept for the guys from one machine dying. Everyone aboard the torpedo survived?

"lettering"

That reminds me of a time when some pro war character posted a photo of weaponry that was allegedly Iranian. The inscriptions on it, however, were in English and used the dating system we Yanks use (month/day/year). Therefore, this alleged evidence against N Korea will likely turn out to be another phony plant used by the pro war crowd in order to stir up hatred and war hysteria. Don't be too surprised if this happens.

North Korea asked the South to let their inspectors in to look at the torpedo but they refused. Hmm......

Anyone can clearly see that this is without doubt a North Korean torpedo thingy.
Apparently there is some doubt'

The team of South Korean and foreign investigators found traces of explosives used in torpedoes on several parts of the sunken ship as well as pieces of composite metal used in such weapons, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said quoting a senior government official.
South Korean officials have not officially accused the North but made little secret of their belief Pyongyang deliberately torpedoed the 1,200-tonne corvette Cheonan in March near their disputed border in retaliation of a naval firefight last year.
The metallic debris and chemical residue appear to be consistent with a type of torpedo made in Germany, indicating the North may have been trying to disguise its involvement by avoiding arms made by allies China and Russia, Yonhap quoted the official as saying.
North Korea has denied involvement and accused South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's government of trying to use the incident for political gains ahead of local elections in June.
